flow lie (lot Even With the Terr rerslst
nt English Passenger.
A well known American prestidigi
tator wns a passenger recently on oiio of
tho big Altantta liners, homeward
bound from England. Ho is n good Ma
tured conjurer, and many times in tbo
smoking room ha exhibited bis skill in
performing trioks for tho nmusoinent of
tho other passengers. Ono of tho fre
quenters of tho smoking room was an
Englishman, who scorned to bo unrtblo
to get enough of tho conjurer's tricks.
Almost every timo tho American en
tered tho room tho Englishman demand
ed 'something more, and usually tho
American complied. Tho conjurer took
part in tho ship's ooncort and did a lot
of surprising things with cards. Tho
Englishman "w in n front seat and fol
lowed tho performance with absorbed
interest. But tho next morning when
tho American walked into tho smoking
room after breakfast tho Englishman
repeated his old demands. Tho conjurer
picked up from ono of tho littlo tables
a pack of cards, which had been used
in tho whist gimio of tho evening bo
foro. Ho handed it to tho Englishman
and said:
"Pick out a card."
Tho Englishman ran over tho pock
and mado mental note of his selection.
"Sbufllo them up," commanded tho
prestidigitator.
Tho Englishman shuffled tho cards
severely, cut and shuffled again. Then
tho conjurer shuffled them. After that
ho laid thorn out, ono by ono, in several
littlo piles. Tho Englishman watched
him with rapt attention. Tho conjuror
gathered up tho little piles and gavo tho
pack to tho Eulgishman again.
"Shuffle them again," ho said.
Tho Englishman did it, and then tho
conjurer picked up tho pack and said:
"Now, do yon remember what card
it was you selected?"
"Oh, yes," answered tho English
man. "I remember it. ' '
"Suro you haven't forgotten?"
"Of couMonot,"
"You can namo tho cord?"
"Certainly."
"Well, then, there's no nso of my
tolling you what it is."
And tho conjurer throw down tho
cards mid wont out, followed by roars
of laughter from tlioso who had seen
tho trick. Now York Sun.
