HOW OLD THE EARTH IS.
Countnl by ."Millions Nut Tlioii.iiuiln, ol
Tho Greek schools, nhovo 2,000 yritrt

antiquity, arid they spook of trnditlous
10,000 or U, 000 yours bofoio thoir time
on fnota not questionnblo from thoir an
tiquity. Bucklniid, from geological con
aluslons, snys it is millions of years
sinco the world was created, nnd the
only question is how many million
yonrs. Different views hnvo been enter
tulned ns to tho earth's formation, one
view boing that it lms cooled down
from a fluid to n solid mass. Sir Wil
liam Thompson has investigated tho
question of tho cooling of the earth nnd
looks upon the increase of temperature
from the surface downward us proof of
the constant loss of heat from the globo,
tho hcut radiating into space without
sensibly clovnting tho tempcraturo of
the upper crust through which it passes.
Tho oontinuauco of such a loss of heat
involves belief iu tho occurrence of a
poriod at which tho earth was a "fluid
mass, and Sir William has fired, that
poriod at not loss than 200,000,000 nor
more thun,'400,000,000 years ago, the
probability being that 100,000,000 of
yoars is tho limit of geological history,
and that prior to that timo the earth's
Bnrfoco was unfit for tho maintenance
of nnlmal or vegetable life. Onr knowl
edge is not sufficient to fix tho period
wbeu tho earth became habltablo or
whon it shall ceaso to bo so. Tho or
ganio world doos not furnish any guide
to the solution of tho problem, unci there
fore it is only a speculative question so
far. Hugh Miller says: "As certainly
as tho sun is the center of our sys
tem must our earth have revolved
around it for millions of years.
Tho earth is of an antiquity incalcula
bly vast. Tho 0,000 years of hu
nlan history form but a portion of tho
geological day which Is passing over
us. Thoy do not cxtond into tho yester
day of our globo, far less touch the myr
iads of ages spread cut beyond. "
Ilotr to Clean Dellcato Fabric
To clean India silk or plush or any
thing dedicate, pnt some gasoliuo iu a
basin; wash tho goods between yonr
bunds, in tho first place ; now turn out
and put iu eonio moro and rinse and
hang out to dry. Gasoliuo is good to
keop buffalo moths away too. Put it
down near tho odgo of tho carpet. Plush
furniture tuny be sprayed with it, as it
evaporates and docs not hurt the most
dellcato goods. Bo careful and don't
have a light near till it hag evaporated.
