Some time ago Colonel G. W.
Macfarlano successfully placed
$750,000 of the bonds of tho Ha
waiian Commercial and Sugar
Company of California in Lon
don, says tho San Francisco Bul
letin, and by cablo today ho was
informed that an official quota
tion for theso bonds had been
granted by tho London Stock
Exchanco, and that tho 4th of
March had beou solected by tho ;
Stock Exclinugo Committee for
the urst settlement on these secu
rities. This is considered a great
triumph, and it is hoped it may
pavo tho way for the listing of
other Californian securities in
that most important financial con
tor of tho world's fiuaucos. Tho
lip mis are known in London as
'lip year sterling debentures,"
bearing interest at fij per cent por
annum, repayable at 105 at
maturity, or at 110 at the option
of tho company any timo after
five years. Coupons aro payable
at London or San Francisco at
tho oflico of the Anglo-California
The debentures are secured by
mortgage on nil tho lands, facto
ries and workB of tho company,
and a floating first charge on all
the other assets of the company.
This company will now enjoy
tho distinction of being the only
company on tho San Francisco
Bond aud Stock Exohango having
tho advantage of a doublo quota
tion for its bonds, i. e., theso secu
rities caii be Bold, or realized up
on, in oitucr the London or Han
Francisco market, and tho Hopar
ate or distinct advantage of tho
London quotation will be that all
London aud New York banks will
rocognizo the security and advance,
as a rule, 00 to 95 por cent of its
quoted value in the London offioial
list for tomporary loans, etc., on
this socurity when hypothecated.
The quotation is incidentally of
advantago to tho Hawaiian re
public, as it is the first Hawaiian
sugar property placed in London,
although Hawaiian securities are
not altogether unknown there, as
Colonel Macfarlano floated the
first Hawaiian Government loan
for $2,000,000 in London, and
subsequently the Hawaiian Street
Bailroad Company, but tho latter
was not a company of local issue
in Hawaii, as it was formed in
London, and is operated from
