IInCTnl "f tho Left llaml Tlnylnn
In Tunc In llognrtl to StrlneR.
After a reasonably good bowing has
been nccpiircd, says a writer in Tho Ln
dies' Jlonio Journal, tho stndy of the
left hand should bo token-up. Tho neck
of tho violin must bo held between the
thumb and tho first finger where it joins
tho hand. Tho entiro length of the fin
ger must 'bo held ntiovo tho edgo of tho
linger board, and tho fingers must fall
donblo jointed and liko tho hammers of
a piano on tho strings "tho very ends of
tho fingers touching tho strings. In or
der to produco a clear tono tho fingers
must bo pressed very hard on tho strings.
"Strong with tho fingers, light with the
bow" is tho constant refrain of ono of
tho most celebrated teachers.
Tlio first difficulty encountered la that
of playing in tune. As tho violin is not
supplied with frets liko tho guitnr or
mandolin tho. cat is tho only guide.
Important as tho pnctiob of tho scales is
on other instruments, it is doubly Im
portant on tho violin, as it is by stale
study principally that tho ability to
pluy in tuno is acquired. Tho playing
of familiar molodles is nlso of very
great advantage- to tho beginner, as ho
can tell when ho is playing out of tune,
whero in tho caso of an excrcibo with
which ho is unacquainted bo cannot bo
easily distinguish this fault In pluylng
tcalo passages tho student must con
stantly nsk himself .whether tho nest
noto is a wholo step or a half step dis
tant beforo ho plays it If ho will, go
through tho excrciso beforehand and
mark tho wholo steps and half steps, ho
will cxecnto it in much better tuno
when ho comes to play it.
In regard to strings, tlio best aro tho
cheapest, as they last longer nnd give n
better tono. Tho O should bo of gut
wrapped with pure silver wire. Tho A
and D should bo of Italian pit, and the
E can bo of cither gut or silk. Silk K
strings givo a poor, dull tone, very dif
ferent from tho singing brilliance of
good Italian gut E's. They aro good for
warm weather playing or for jiertoua
whoso fingers persplro very frttly. Th
hair of tho bow should bo renewed ev
ery two months in tho caso of players
who practico very much, as it wears
smooth and will not tako hold of the
string. Tho violin should always bo
kept strung np in pitch. Do not let
down tho strings of tho instrument with
tho mistaken idea that you will savo
sonic of them thereby. Nover neglect an
opportunity to hear good violinists.
Something can bo learned from each. A
student learns ns inneh from hearing
others play as from private lessons with
a teacher. If you can only take u few
lesson1!, let it lo from thu best teacliM
you can find.
