tho direction of F. W. Putnam,
for a systematic exploration of tho
peoples of tho North Pacific Coasts
between tho Amoorvrivor, in Asia,
and tho Columbia, in America.
Three expeditions will bo .fitted
out, whose work, carried on in tho
State of Washington and in Brit
ish Columbia, at Behring straits
and along tho Asiatio Coast, will
coverod a poriod of "G years, Iho
first of these parlieswill leavo for
Washingtou and British Columbia
toward tho end of Mny. It will
consist probably of four men un
dor Dr. Franz Boas, assistant cur
ator of tho lnusouiUj nud will in
elude Hiram I. Smith, assistant
in tho museum, who will have
chargo of tho aichaoologicul in
vestigations. Tho expeditions to Siberia nnd
Alaska, whoso poreonnel is not
yot decided upon, will probably
start this fall and upxt spring ro
spoctivoly. Tho chief objoot of
theso expeditious will be to in
vestigate tho origin and oarly his
tory of the American race, and to
trace its rolutions with the races
of tho old world in tho north.
Tho relations between the Ameri
can and Asiatic peoples have
been a much-discussod problem,
and it is proposed to go ovor tho
ground in a more thorough and
systematic way than has ovor
boon attempted before This is to
be done before tho complotipn of
tho Siberian railway and "other
civilizing influences havo destroy
ed tho pritnitivo conditions now
existent iu Northern Asia.
