A goodvstory is told by London
papers about Captain Sloeum,
travelling round tho wirld in tho
little yacht Spray all by himself
and known also to tlm Apia public
in cooscquenco of his stay in our
harbor last year, says tho Samoa
Horald. When Captain Sloeum
was lying with his nutshell in
Newcastle harbor, N. S. W., tho
L. M. 8. S. John Williama ar
rived there Tho missionaries
paid a visit to the Captain with
out crow and expressed their as
tonishment at tho hazardous voy
ago, but wore still moro surprised
when they were shown his equip
ment of nautical instruments,
consisting but of one rusty sextant,
ono old fashioned chronometer
and ono woll worn out tolescopo.
On loaving tho yacht ono of tho
rovorend gontlomon said: "You
must have a groat eonfi
donco in Providence," "Woll,"
ropuou bloeum, "sucli may
bo tuo caso sometimes." lue
noxt day tho captain returned tho
visit ou board tho steamer John
Williams, and noticod thero three
compasses, threo chronometers
and other nautical instruments of
tho best and latest make. After
having inspeoted them very care
fully, Tie turuod to the rovorond
gentlemen and said seriously: "It
seems to mo, gontlomon, that on
this Blnp tuore is not much contin
ence bestowed on Providence."
Theso aro days of considerable
anxiety and porplexity to all who
havo possessions or other interests
in the Bepublic of Hawaii, and it
is time that our citizens camo to a
mutual .understanding on sovcral
important issues. Tho prospects
for Annexation appear at present
vaguo and indistinct, and our
destiny cannot bo foretold with
certainty. Thero aro those, also,
who still fondly cling to tho hopo
of a return to tho old ordor of
things, and who cannot bo per
suaded otherwise, yet this out
look appears far moro hazy than
that of Annexation oven to tho
most hopoful disciples of tho
Monarchy. But, fortunately, in
tho midst of all this uncertainty
there is solace in the fact that
Buffalo Boor has camo to stay and
that patrons of all sorts and
opinions may equally sharo tho
benefits of its invigorating and
sustaining properties. Wo aro
moreover assured that this favorite
brow will continue to be dispens
ed as herotoforo at tho Royal,
