How to I'urnl.li Tills Attractive Spot For
Kane nnd Comfort
Tho iden of converting n deep Yrrmitln
into n sort of summer sitting renin U a
good ono If not overworked. If such nn
attempt is made, grcnt enro must bo
taken not to shut tho piazza In too
closely by draperies mid screens, nnd
not to overload it with furnishings. Tho
beauty of such nn outdoor room is that
It must bo absolutely light nnd nlry,
and any contrivance thnt shuts out light
or sunshlno or that cuts off tho view of
green fields or bluo sky is to bo discour
aged. If a screen of any sort Is desired,
growing vines should answer tho pnr
poso admirably. A Japnueso screen or
curtain of slender bamboo rods is not
objectionable, and if a drapery of any
sort is considered necessary tho furnish
ing stores nro offering sonio very pretty
and inexpensive curtain stuffs thnt will
nnswer tho purpose. Furthermore,
which is a great point In veranda draper
ies, they may bo washed.
In tho actnal furnishing of tho veran
da comfort should bo tho first considera
tion. Accordingly a hammock should bo
tho first thing bought This should bo
as long and capacious as possible, and
it should bo swung across tho slghtliest
corner of tho veranda, so that everything
may conduco to tho nbsoluto comfort; of
its occupants. r Hammock cushions,moy
bo obtained in all possible varieties, and
there can hardly bo too many of them
to mnko a veranda comfortable. '
Veranda chairs should be roomy af
fairs of wicker bamboo or of prcttyi
'green ruth wood, and each should have
its own supply of cushions. Do not force
summer loungers to sit upright in a
narrow, straight chair, nnd, on the other
hand, do not stow them away in rock
ing chairs, for thcra is no place where
tho sharp points of rockers are likely to
causo more aunoynnco. It is cffectlvo
and practicable to have, ono color, such
as bright red, promlnont in all tho cush
ions and draperies. .
Two or thrco bamboo stands or tables
aro indispensable fo tho propor equip
ment of a conifortablo veranda. Ono is
for tho magazines and summer novlcs,
whilo another must stand ready for tho
lemonado or other refreshment that vo
rauda cxistenco so frequently demands.
How to Mnkn Crrftni Candy.
Placo over tho fire a vessel containing
2 largo cupfuls of granulated sugar and
half a dozen tablcspoonfuls of water.
Let the mixture boil until, when allttlo
of tho sirup is dropped into a cup of cold
water, it will harden. Tho moment it
will do this add 2 tenspoonf uls of vanilla
nnd a small teaspoonful of cream of
tartar. Then turn into a buttered dish,
and when cool enough to handlo with
tho hands pull it until it is white, cut
into short lengths nnd set away to gut

has been treated in this way. Hang in
tho nir nutil tho odor has disappeared.
Tako enro that no gas is lit in tho room
whilo tho naphtha is being used.
To wash tho rug, put into a tub about
four gallons of tepid water and half a
pint of household ammonia. Let the
rug soak in this for about half an hoar,
sopping it up nnd down in tho water
frequently. Riuso in fcevcral tepid wa

washed. Kubbiug it between the hnndp
tends to soften it, or it may bo folded
