HOW OLD THE EARTH IS.
Counted by Million, Not Thousands, a4
Tho Greok schools, nbovo 2,000 yonr
go, trcntod tho world ns of indefinite
antiquity, and they sp&ik of traditions
10,000 or 14, 000 years before tbelr tiino
m facta not questionable from tholr an
tiquity. Buckland, from geological con
clusions, aays it is million of years
lnco the world was oronted, and the
only question is how many million
rears. Different views linvo been enter
tainod ns to tho earth's formation, ens
view being .that it has cooled down
from a fluid to a solid mans.' Sir Wll
Ham Thompson bos investigated tho
question of tho cooling of'tliu earth and
looks upon tho lucrcaso of tempornturo
from tho surfneo downward ns proof of
the constant loss of heat from the globe,
tho hoat radiating into spaco without
sensibly elevating tho tempornturo of
tho upper crust through which it passes.
Tho oontinnanoo of such a loss of heat
involves belief in the occurrence of a
period at which tho earth was a fluid
mass, nnd Sir William has fixed that
period at not loss than 200,000,000 nor
! more than 400,000,000 years ago, tho
probability being that 100,000,000 of
years is tbo limit of geological History,
and that prior to that timo the earth's
surface was unfit for tho maintenance
of animal or vcgatablo lifo. Our knowl
edge is not sufficient to fix tho period
when tbo earth became habitable or
when It shall cease to bo so, Tho or
gauio world does not furnish any guide
to the solution of tho problem, nnd thoro
foro it is only a speculative question so
for. Hugh Miller Bays: "As certainly
m the sun Is the center of our sys
tem must our earth bavo revolved
around it for millions of years.
The earth" is of an antiquity incalcula
bly vast The 6,000 years of hu
man history form but a portion of tho
geological .day which is passing ovor
us. They do not extend into tho yester
day of our globo, for loss touch tbo myi
lads of ages spread out beyond. "
now to Clran Delicate Fabric.
To clean India silk or plush or any
thing delicate, put some gosolino in
basin; wash tho goods botwees your
hands, in the first place; now turn out
and pu( in eomo nioro and rinso and
hang out to dry. Gnsolind is good to
keep buffalo moths away too. Pnt it
down near tho edgo of tho carpet. Plush
furniture may be sprayed with it, as it
evaporates and docs not hurt tho most
delicate goods. Bo careful and don't
have a- light near till it bat) evaporated.
now to Carve.
Tho carving knifo must bo very sharp,
not heavy, and should bo held firmly in
the hand. Tho dish should not bo too
far from tho carver, who should always
accustom himself to do tho work when
sitting. Remember that tho middlo part
of a fish is generally tho best, and in
helping it avoid breaking tho flakes, for
that will givo a mangled appearance. ,In
carving, never send anybody tho outside
piece unless you know ho prefers it Ho
member that all carving, oven of poultry
and birds, depends more on skill than
on strength. By observing quietly you
can cosily ocquiro u knowledge of joints
nnd of tho process of curving, which a
llttlo daily practice will speedily con
vert into dexterity. In arranging a plate
novcr put ono picoo of meat on another,
but sido by side.
Uncertainties and n Certainly.
Tbe attention of tbo public is
now fully occupied anrl diverted
in tbo consideration and discus
sion of several important current
and prospective happenings. An
nexation, as yet uusocure, Re
ciprocity threatened; the coining
of the Nauiwa, and her mission
after arrival; tho outcome of the
war between Greece and Turkey
and, whether or no, all Europe
will ovontuolly become involved;
the settlement of the quarantine
squabble are all themes of much
conjecture and uncertainty, and
while opinions are freely offorod,
none can accurately foretoll the
outcome of any of these matters.
Nevertheless, it is becoming more
apparent, as oach day passes, that
Buffalo and Hoilbrau are tho
favorite brews, and it is gratify
ing that assuranco is given that
regular shipments of these whole
some and strengthening bever
ages can bo depended upon, and
that thay will, as heretofore, bo
dispensed at the Boyal, 'Pacific
and Cosmopolitan Saloons, and
that tho interchangeable check
system is an established fact.
