NEW PUNCTUATION MARK.
A ltnilly NinliMl Invention fttiggrsted bj
the Cnuntlo Copy Header.
"I hi i till bo famous. I lmvo nn idea
thnt will Fend my uunio thuiulrriug
down through tho ages," remarked th3
copy render.
"Huruphl" replied tho humorist. "It
will bo tho first idea you Lava over had.
You spend most of your tiinu destroying
tho good ideas of others."
"Well, thut inny be, although you
never bnvo nny idea to destroy, sccitig
that yon get thoo which you lmvo from
Joo Miller's jokobook and tho old ul
nuuittcs." "Oh, well, let's bavo your Ideal"
"To tell tlio truth, it was suggested
to mo by yen."
"Ah I I thought as much, and yet you
say"
"Don't bo In too big a hurry. You
haven't heard my idea."
"What is it?"
"I lmvo invented a punctuntlon
mark for humor. It is intended to show
tho reader whero to laugh. In olden
times, you know, tho point of tho joko
used to bo printoil in italics. Nowadays
there is no way to show tho point, and,
as many of tho jokes, such as yours,
bnvo no point, it is impossiblo to print
tho point in italics. Now, I suggest that
a punctuation mark bo placed at tho bo
giuning and at tho end of everything
supposed to bo funny, so that the reader
may bo prepared to laugh when ho be
gins to read and know when ho has
reached tho point and it is timo to
laugh. I would suggest that tho mark
bo two little squares placed nbovo tho
line, mid I shnll call it by my name!
What do you think of that for an idea?
It was suggested by your stuff, as I told
you."
But tho humorist had given tho copy
reader it look of scorn uud bad vanished

Pennobunkor Yes, sho is.
Jcnks Vhat is sho cross about?
Pennobunkor In the first plaeo, she

cross at herself because she got cross at
tho servant girl. Do yon understand?

Uncertainties nud a Certainty.
Tho attention of tho public is
now fully occupied and diverted
in the consideration and discus
sion of several important current
and prospective bapponings. An
nexation, as yet unsecure, Re
ciprocity threatened; tho coming
of the Nauiwa, nud her mission
after nrrival; tho outcome of tho
war botween Greece and Turkey
and, whether or no, ull Europo
will eventually become involved;
tho settlement of tho quarantine
squabble nro all themes of much
conjeoturo and uncertainty, and
whilo opinions aro freoly offered,
none can accurately foretell tho
outcome of any of those matters.
Nevertheless, it is becoming more
apparent, as each day passes, that
Buffalo and Hoffbrau are tho
favorite brews, and it is gratify
ing that assurance is givon that
regular shipments of tbeso whole
some and strengthening hover
ages can bo deponded upon, and
that th ay will, as heretofore, bo
dispensed at the Royal, Pacific
and Oosmopolitan Saloons, and
that tho interchangeable check
system is an established fact.
