Washington, Juno 12. Grovor
Cleveland has recently had under
consideration an offor mado him
by ono or tho leading literary
syndicates for a sories of articles
on ourrent topics, to appear at the
rato of two a month; Tho price
to havo been paid for this work
was SGO.OOO a year, $2,500 for each
literary effort.
After giving tho matter due
consideration Mr. Glevoland has
decided not to undertake to do the
work, as he does not caro topledgo
himself to tho performance of a
task so arduous as tho regular
preparation of those syndicate
artioles would inevitably prove in
his case.
Whereas an ordinary man in
political lifo might undertake to
furnish a fortnightly artioleon the
ourrent topics of tho day, in Mr.
Cleveland's cobo it would bo an
altogether different matter. Even
tho briefest and most casual bit of
writing, appearing as a syndicate
article over his signature, would
attract widespread attention and
give occasion for general comment
and criticism. Therefore an arti
cle of great length and im
portance, requiring thought and
attention to the course of publio
events, wonld, Mr. Cleveland
feels, keep him so tied to tho work
as to materially interfere with
any other business he might have
in contemplation.
Mr. Cleveland has before him
tho definite purposo of writing a
history of his two administrations.
From a most roliablo sourco this
statemont is affirmed as correct.
But tho history ib not to appear
daring his lifetime. Of necessity,
in event of such a nistory being
written, the use of the capital "1"
would be very prominent, and it
is largely on this account that Mr.
Cleveland has decided that it shall
be posthumous. He has a rich
and abundant fund of material for
this work, which will prove a
more than ordinarily valuable con
tribution to the history of the
country. He is a man of unusual
ly methodical habits in regard to
all business affairs, and during his
two administrations be has sys
tematically gathered material
which will be of nse in the future
compilation of this history.
Princeton University on Wed
nesday next will confer on Mr.
Cleveland tho honorary degree of

Our Fs and
Our I's are just as strong as they were fifty yeara ago,
when we have cause to use them. But we have less and
less cause to praise ourselves, since others do the praising,
and we arc more than willing for you to sec us through
j j other eyes. This is, how
sale and retail druggist, JJuluth, Minn., who alter a quarter
of a century of observation writes:
" I have sold Ayer's Sarsaparilla for more than 25 years,
both at 'wholesale and retail, and have never heard any
thing but words of praise' from my customers ; not a single
complaint has ever reached me. I believe Ayer's Sar
saparilla to be the best blood purifier that has been intro
duced to the general public." This, from a man who has
sold thousands ot dozens of Ayer's Sarsaparilla, is strong
testimony. But it only echoes popular sentiment the world
over, wnich has " Nothing but words of praise for
Ayer's Sarsaparilla."
