Mort of tho French journals LtivoTl
pnllo do depechos whero bullotlns nro
displnyrd mid n museum of rolics of tho
paper is kept French journalism is
much moro porronnl in regard to its lit
erary composition than that of England
or America. A largo proportion of tho
nrticles nro signed with the names of
tho writers, even when the work is
more or lrps of a rontlno nature, such
as tho sporting or law departments of
the paper. On tho other baud, tho own
ership of newspapers is less frequently
lodged in single hands than is tho cam
in America. Very many of tho French
papers aro owned by companies or asso
ciations, while tho stock of sovcrnl of
tht1 best known, such as Tho Figaro nud
Petit Journal, is bought nud sold daily
ou tho Stock Exchange, tho quotations
appearing ns regularly as .those of rail
way shares or Government bonds.
Tho circulation of all but a very few
of tho Paris papers varies enormously,
according to tho contents. If a paper
contains a striking article, well adver
tised previously, or if its fcuillctou, con
tinued stoiy or memoirs, which most ol
tho Flinch journals consider an essen
tial part of their daily issue, is by somo
well known author, tlm circulation will
run up 60,800 or 100,000, In a week
and drop again as soon as the special
fcatuio is discontinued. When Lo Jour
began publishing M. Henri Rochcfort'i
memoirs, its circulation went up five
fold, although tho price of tho paper
had been doubled in order to mako hay
whilo tho sun shone.
Tho French press is much moro con
centrated in tho capital than that ol
other' European countries. In Germany,
for instance, it is not the press of Berlin,
that has the largest' circulation or tho'
greatest influonca In this, as in many
other matters, however, the French
picas only buns out tho tiaying thut
