Tim Imitative Qna1lt.
To Unit fur distant legion lying be
low Hudiuu bay it fur trader took his
Boston brido mid on tho following Sun.
dny proudly led licr to t lie font of hon
or In ilio littlo chapel. Tim rougregu
tlou, to be euro, cousisted chiefly of
converted Eskimos, but there wcro n
few English nml American residents,
ami the unlives, as tlio story will show,
woro not utiuppruclutiyo.
Tho brido was dressed In tho volumi
nous fashion of 30 years ago. A gener
ous circle indeed would lmvo boon re
quired to outline, her skirts, nud a co
quettish little voil nhadod tho upper
half of her pretty face.
Entranced sat tho Eskimo women,
but with tho call to prayer their heads
bent reverently in tho customary atti
tude, of worship. Wcro they following
tho earnest words of tho minister? Went
their petitions rising with his? On tho
contrary, all tho women wcro busily en
gaged in dragging forward to tho tips
of their noses the nets which, after long
urging, tho missionaries had indticcd
them to adopt to couiiuo their flowing
hair. Tho voil of tho brido had demor
alized their religious duvotion.
Such was tho honesty of theso Hud
son bay Indians that novcr but once
did tho missionaries loso any possessions
by theft. The week following this
memorable Sabbath tho Americans
could not keep a barrel for themselves,
evcii tho ouo dovotcd to ashes fulling
opart ono night because its hoops had
been purloined. Wlioro they went, how
ever, tho former possessors had abuu
diintovideuco at tho next chapel service.
It is not ulono among primitive peo
ple that tho imitative quality in promi
nent After Fox made his b'rilllaut
speeches in parliament it was the fash
ion, even ns far as Paris, to be a think
ing man, to tbiak like Foi, while the
story of eomo hnughty Lady Imogen or
of a wrecker of the wept hiwt ruined
many a young follower. It is by imita
tion of what is trivial and false or oi
what is beautiful and good th;t we
descend or mount n few hteps toward
tho likeness of what vao admire.
Youth's Companion.
The Work of Honrj-brrs.
To Becuro a pound of honey, which i
equivalent to something like 3,000 colli',
would toko n bee several years. In fine
weather tho bco makes calls upon CO to
80 flowers in a day's outing. During
this tinio it collects what is equivalent
to gralu of nectar, which is a thin
Birup and lias to bo evaporated to make
honey. Tlio bco, uftcr working all day,
spends the greater part of the night
fanning tho nectar with its wings to
evaporato thd surplus wator. In this
way it shortens its lifo by wearing out
its wings. Langstroth says that a bee
at tho height of the working season
lives about threo working weeks and
then dies. Bees frequently perish on
tho way homo becauso their wings are
so shattered and splintered that they
refuse toKiipport tho body. If a disabled
bco reaches tho hivo alive, it spends the
rcmiiiu('' of its days as nurse, house
keeper und in general utility work. A
gooil and fertile queen beo keeps the
hivo full of bees during tho season.
When tho honey flow stops, slio ceases
laying at ouucj then tho workers kill all
of the drones and manifest other symp
toms of a consuming desiro for retrench
ment. Now York Ledger.
