"As tohrf.?"
"As to Unit 'oro dog; o1 mine. I liov

but I think ho ronM liold It's own."
'You must bucrnay, ' m Inituecl the
owner of the bcur. "Why, hu'd chaw
your dog up at one fculp.'" j
"Mehbe be would, stranfcer, mebbe
ho would, but Fonichnw or t'other I
can't believe that ho would. I'vo know;
cd thnt dog fur threo y'nrs, and I dou'i
belike Tour b'nr could clniw him up."
"Well, it sttiuds to rensou tbnt ho
could. From tho looks o' lilm I should
say flint almost nuy sort of dog oould
roll that dop o' youru over. Ho'b ready
to run now."
"Yes, ho looks thnt wnr," slowly re
marked tho old mini, "but that's his
decciviu p'iut. What's tho valuo of your
b'ar?"
"Fifty dollars."
"Wnal, I'vo got 50 in gold which
says he can't chaw my dog up in no
one minit, nor five nor ten minutes."
"What'Rthat? Yomwaut to put your
dog ag'in my bear?"
"I do, stiMnscr, and my money is
ready. We'll turn 'cm looso on tho plat
form, and if your b'ar chaws up my
dog the cash is yonrn."
Tho owner of tho bear had but $20,
'but he put up his Winchester for tho
balance, and as soon an the stakes wero
up wo got into tho station and loft
the dog and the bear man to arrange
things. Some of the slats to the cago
wero loosened, and after n fow minutes
all was ready and tho two men joined
ns intddn. Tho dog scratched at the door
and whined to got in, and after a look
about bird tho bear left tho cage and
started for the canine.
"One gulp and your dog is gone I"
shouted the bear man. But ho wasn't'
out of the woods yet The dog wa off
tlio platform and np the trail in a flash,
while tho benr followed at u slower gait.
They had been out of sight five minutes
when tho bear man suddenly cxolaimed:
"Why why that bear won't como
back!"
"No, I reckon not," replied the old
man.
"But but"
"But the bet was that he'd chaw up
my dog, and ho hasn't done it"
Tho bear man looked up nnd down
and around, and tho situation finally
dawned upon him nud ho said to the old
man:
"Stranger, did you eyer strike a fall
blown idiot before"
"Yes; two or threo."
"And did you leavo 'em dead broko
and far from home?"
"Oh, no I I alius felt sorry fur 'em
and left 'em sunthin fur railroad fare."
And he handed tho bear muu $10 of
the $20, took the rifle on his arm and
rodo away down the trail without look
ing back. M. Quad.
