City rose to tho occasion. Thou
sands of ynrds of yollow hunting,
intortwiucd with purple, gaily
docked tho fronts of tho largo
buildings, through tho longth and

hundreds of electric lichts.
Banners stretched across the
main streets from ouo cn'd of tho
city to tho other, nnd shops and
stores viod with each other in
making their windows sufficiently
nttrnctivo, to entice the dollars
from tho pockets of tho visitors.
Reception committees had been
well organized, so that there was
comparatively little difficulty in
housing the now comers. From
estimates lately made it is found
that something like 35,000
strangers had flocked into the city
during the week.
An elaborate program had been
drawn np, providing for meetings
for each of tho ton days, during
which the conference was in ses
sion. These all took place with
out the slightest departuro from
the plans laid down.
The proceedings commenced
with a monster meetini; in tho

Tho hall was orowded and tho
rendering ot the various hymns
by such a mass oE voices was an
event not soon to be forgotten.
At the conclusion ot tue conven

cert. The program was of a high
class charactor, including.
Handel's "Hallelujah Chorus,"
"And tho glory of the Lord,"
Mendelssohn's "How lovely are
the messengers," and Gounod's
"Send out thy light." These noble
works were rendered by a chorus
of 1500 voices, assisted by an
orchestra of 200 in such a style as
would havo done credit to any
London concert hall. "The Sea
hath pearls," by a select ohorus,
unaccompanied, received an en

For tho pleasure and profit of
the visitors numerous excursion
tripswere organized at ridiculously
low fares; o. g., to the Yosemite
Valley, round trip, $18.50 Thous
auds availed themselves of these
concessions, aud tho various
ticket offices were hourly besieged
by the excursionists. Tho ferry
boats, too. oresented an unusually
animated appearance. One feature
in these trios was the sincing of
the Endeavorers. One of their
number would commence the first
few Btruius of one of the hymns
or anthems from their program,
end the strain waa instantly taken

On our return to tho station, what
was our surprise to find each of
our curs a mass of flowers and
ferns, no two cars being decorated
on tho same plan.
' An unfortunate mishap oc
curred with regard to the baggage
belonging to the visitors. Owing
to tho pressure put up
on tho railway companies
hundreds of trunks, valises, bags,
etc., went astray or were piled np
in tho depot in such endless con

the owners to claim or recognize
them. Several unfortunates actu
