In vain, for they only reveal what they
inlstnkenly try to conceal. Tho beat
method by far Is to conceal tho figure by
graceful draiicriei and moderately loose
cornets. A stout woman should novcr
attempt to wear a severely plain cloth
gown. She should leavo that to tho
slender woman alono. Nor shonld she
wear a aeparato bodice, or ono of a con
trasting color. Tho short round bodlre
is nlso to Ijo avoided, but for a heavy
walking drest few styles look so well as
tho skirt and long co.it, with loose open
fronts. Dark, subdued colors are, of
courso, best, for nothing looks worso on
a fat woman than a brilliunt or a light
colored gown. Tho effect of lines should
bo studied too. For instance, it is only
n slim waist that looks well when en
circled by a ribbon sash, but even a
stout woman would look well with tho
ribbons let in at tho side seams and fas
tened with flowing ends in a point be
low the waist. Tho good and bad points
of the fat woman's figure shonld be
studied, and loose draperies, lace jabots
and flowing ribbons will go far in dis
guising tho bad ones. One thing to be
rcmombered, however, is that under
neath tho looso draperies and drooping
fronts thero must bo a foundation of
well cut, well fitting lining.
Dow to Ascertain the Health of am In
fant. A child from birth to (1 months of ago
shonld bo weighed weekly, as by this
means, almost to tho exclusion of all
others, wo can toll how tho child is de
veloping. During tho first week there- is
generally loss iu weight, but by tho end
of tho second week the child should
have regained its birth weight, nnd if
there is u gain of 1pm than four ounces
weekly or a stationary weight wo know
there is sonio fault with it- nutrition,
either iu quantity or quality of tho milk
which it receives or its powers of assimilation.
