ROOSEYELUO HIS RIDERS
Typical
Farewell "Teddy"
Delivered.
Speech
Urges His Men Not to Rest on Tbelr Laurels
Tribute to Chaplain Brown and
Yalor of the Men.
Camp "WikofT, (Montauk Point,
N.Y.), Sept. -1. Colonel Rooso
volt mado his farowell speooh to
his plucky boys this morning at
sorvioo. It was a typical "Teddy"
RooaoTolt speech that bo mado,
full of common sonso, homoly
procept and keen wit, and tho
Rough Ridors on joyed it immense
ly. Firo hundred bronzed and
beared man squattod Indian
fashion on tho parohod grass in
front of tho opon tents. On a
littlo platform woro a folding
organ, four young woraon to load
the singing, Major Whittlo of tho
Soldiore' Christian Association,
Chaplain Brown and Colonol
Roosevelt.
After tho losson tho mon sang
"Onward, Christian Soldior," vory
hoartily. Majoc Whittle then
mado a short address, and led his
henrers in singing tho "Bnttlo
Hymu of tho Republic." After
this Colonel Roosovolt mado his
way to tho side of the organ. Ho
said:
Men, or rnthor comrades, of tho
Rough Ridors: Wo aro not really
saying good-by. It's going to bo
a week or ton days boforo wo nre
mustered out, and in that timo I
shall soo oaoh ono of you for a
personal good-by talk. But I
wantod to talk to you on tho war
when you wore all togother, and 1
embraced tho chanco.
You know how closoly wo nro
knit togother, mora closoly, I be
lieve, than ovor a body of men
woro. Death only is going to
break our friendship and loyalty.
"Wo were satisfied to koop on fight
ing. Wo did not say after Jjas
Qunsinos, "Well, that's enough.
Let sotno other rogimont do tho
rest." In faot, when wo woro asked
that night as we lay in trenches if
we did not want to bo roliovod we
said, "Oh, no; wo nro horo now and
wo will stay."
But sb wo havo got to stop fight
ing and go back to tho moro pro
saic, but no loss important, ways
of peace, wo must agree at last to
keop up our friendships. Tho as
sociation wo havo formed will bo n
priceless possession to us and tho
proudest of inhoritanco to our
sons.
Now, to make this perfect wo
must act in our futuro lifo on tho
ovor highor grade. Don't go homo,
boys, and loan ou your laurels.
Laurols wither, you know, and
they aro not comfortable us a per
manent bed. Don't put on any
"edge" because of your fino record.
Tho world will stand that for
about ton days. Then it will say,
"Rathor a pity ho wont to tho war,
isn't it ? "
Tho Colonol then paid a glow
ing tribute to Chaplain Brown for
his courage and holpfulness in
Cuba, saying: "Ho wati on tho firo
line as often as nny of us in his
work of rescuing tho wounded
mon, and ho had a carbine in that
first day of tho fight."
Tho Rough Ridors choored
themselves hoarso at this and tho
chaplain blushod liko an ingonuo.
"If tho revorond gontlomon will
pardon mo," said tho Colonol in
conclusion, "I will toll ono little
story. Several persons called nu
mo yostoruay and said, 'Un, you
wero bravo to lead your mou up
that hill.'
" 'Why, I didn't led them,' I
auswored. 'I tuul to run liko holl
to keop them trom running over
mo.' "
