fered badly from vino disease, but
in 1870 it was discovered tuat tho
Amorican sort Isabel was not sub
ject to tho disease. Now tho pro
duction is 5,600,000 litres, and it
is a very profitable culture.
Tobacco is cultivated with groat
care and has a yield of 300 tons.
Thoro aro throo cigar factories;

men. Tho best broeds of cattle aro
hero met, and, besides supplyidg

Cinnamon wore brought to teach
tho cultivation of tea, and now the

Millions of bottles of excellent
miuoral water for drinking, called
Lombadas, aro exported to all
parts of tho world.
There aro threo hospitals, at
Ponta Dolgada and two othor
towns, where all kinds of poor
people aro recoived without pay. .

in detail of tho seven remaining

go. With thoir populations they
aro: Tercoira, 32,000; St. George,
3120; Graoiosa, 8400; Pico, 10,200;
Fayal, 2300; Flores, and Corvo,
