Plnty of Local Money Said to Be

For months past tho ownere of
coffeo plantations iu Olaa have
boon tnlkinp Hiigar catio in connec
tion with thoir coffeo trees. More
than two years ago roso bamboo
catio was plauted at tlifTereut alti
tudes nnd occasional patches of
yellow Onledouian were plautod.
The result 1ms been such that the
proposition to build a sugar mill
in Olaa is favorably considered.
Charles E. Enian, who haB ex
tensive1 intoiests in Olaii, has look
ed carefully into tha matter uud
will visit Naalohu with samples of
soil aud stalks of tho cuue. Under
tho Bunorvision of Qeoriio O
Hewitt, munagor of Hutchinson's
plantation, tho cano will bo around
and an analysis made iu order
that the amount of saccharin mat
ter may bo dotormiucd. Tho eotl
will bo examined by tho chemist
at Naalohu for the purpose of as
certaining itsrequiromonts, if any,
for th profitable growing of cano.
A. F. Liudor, who owns a big
enffon land tract, will cultivate two
huudrcd aero in cauo and thu
bnlanco in coffeo. Tho olhor
plantors will no doubt put thoir
lands not now in coffeo iu cano.
The total acreage has not beon
Hettlod upon and probably will
not be until reports nro had from
Mr. Eagai ou his return from
Naalehu. Samplos of both varie
ties of cano will bo taken to Nna
Inlm for testing, but it is believed
that tho Caledouian will produce
raoro sugar at hiuh olovationathan
tho rose bamboo. Sumo of this
cane baa roachcdn height of eloven
foet. Tho joints aro not as close
togetbor as tho roso bamboo and
it is beliovod tho yield will be
It is not tho intention, as far as
tho matter has now gono, to incor
porate, oxcept as tho mill proper
ty; tho planlors will contiuuo to
own thoir land and tako the caue
to tho mill to bo ground. Practi
cally co-operation will bo the
Hlogau and it will mean tho boIu
.tiou of tho most difficult problom
to tho coffee grower labor.
Tho mill will probably bo locat
ed somewhere in tho vicinitv nf
eleven miles so as to nccommodate
the prospective plantors in lieaau.
This will necessitate tho construc
tion of good maendamizod roads
from tho main Volcano road to the
tract lying back It will also ne
cessitate tho building of a railroad
:o Hilo so ns to bring tho crop to
a point for shipping. It is under
stood that Ihe capital for this" lat
ter euterpriso is ready and that
nearly all tho capital required for
constructing tho mill will bo ob
tained iu Honolulu and Hilo, only
a small portion of it coming from
Mr. J. W. Muson, when nsked if
tho ftixioty of tho coffeo mou to
olatit th 'ir lands in cano was not
an indication of lack of confidence,
" Not by any moans. It may,
perhaps, stand in tho way of larger
holdings of coffeo lands, but it will
make thoso already planted a buc
cosb, if for no othor reason than
that it solves tho labor problom.
Wo have two huudrod ucroa of
laud that wo will plant in cano,
but our confidonce in iho prospects
of colFoo aro as strong as it is pos
biitlMo bo. This sugar vonturo
will bring us raoro roads, it will
npi'u up lands that will bring ai
prout to mo owners sooner, por
!iapn, than if planted in coffeo,
and Hilo will bo greatly bonefited.
I know that cano was planted scv
oral yoars ago moroly as an expori
ment and it has grown so well that
tho Olaa mon beliovo it will bo a
good ochomo to go oxtousively in
to tho cultivation of it. Every
thing depends upon getting a mill
erected thero, and I beliovo the
raonoy for it is noar at hand." -Hawaii
