doorway" in Hawaii. Tho tariff
laws of the United States will be
extended to tho islands without
alternation, becauso Hawaii was
formally annexed to tho United
States by a statuto law, and any
othor courso would unquestionably
bo opposed by tho Supreme Court.
Tho present Supromo Court for
tho islands is to bo continued.
Tho local laws; whoso forco will
also bo continued as far as possi
ble, as they havo boon taken from
tho statuto books of difforont states
iu tho Union, are, as a whole, ac
ceptable. Tho immigration, labor
aud general election laws of tho
United Statos will bo specifically
extended to the islands. Theso
will koep out furthor importation
of coolies. Tho Governor nnd
sorao of tho higher territorial offi
cers will bo appointed by tho Pre
