FROM COFFEE TO GOLD
Olaf Petersen of Olaa, Proves a
Lucky One.
Went to Dawson City In March and Re
turned In the Garonne Warns Those
Who May Contemplate a Trip.
Among tho passengers in tho
Garonuo from Soattlo was Olaf
Peter-on, a cofTVo planter of tho
Olaa district in Hawaii, who, since
March 11, hn beuu in tho region
of Dawson City taking out gold
from the earth. Mr. Petersen
waB originally from Tacomn. Ho
enmo out here n couple of years
ago to enter into the coffeo busi
ness. Choosing a placo n littlo
nbovo tho fonrtoen milo lino ho
settled down to tho work of plant
ing coffeo and improviug his laud.
Then camo tho uews of gold in
tho Klondike. Mr. Potersen did
not make a move until the rush
was nil over aud pooplo began to
roturn Bomo with experience and
gold nud others with only tho
former. It was then that ho and
A. IJamsay, another Olna coffee
man, started for tho cold region.
Spenkiug of his trip, Ms. Peterson
said:
"Yob, I struck it lucky but do
not caro to Bay what I got out of
it. Four olairnB wore staked off
by mo. Of ono of ihcso 1 sold n
half. An offer was made mo for
tho remaining half. I shall go
back to Tacomn in tho Garonuo
and, in April, Bhall return to my
claims. After regulating matters
there 1 shall roturn to Hawaii as
it is country well worth living in.
"I wnut to say through your
columns, a fow words of warning
to thoso pooplo in the Islands who
may coutompiato a trip to tuo
Klondike. No man has a right to
go theio unless no is abovo tho
average in tho matter of physical
strength. He must also go well
provided with food. I havo eoen
so many mou fall by tho wayside
that 1 feel it my duty to offer this
warning.
"In Dawson City there are
20,000 idlo men and, when I left,
thoy woro dying at the rnto of
from seven to ton per dny. Added
to tho fnct thnt they havo no em
ployment with which to keop
themselves goiug, is another
tho extremoly unsanitary condi
tion of Dawson City. Tho draiu
ngo is auylhing but satisfactory
nnd when tho thaws como tho
place, being flat, is rendered vory
ilnmp by standing water.
"There is no fuu in going to
tho Klondike. Hardships and
disappointments lurk ou overy
side and, in tho fever of excite
ments such as tho 'stampedes,'
men loso their livos through ex
haustion or so impair thoir health,
that thoy are useless for tho re
mainder of thoir lives.
"Now then, n littlo as to thoso
"stampedes." In ordor to stake
off ono of my claims I was forced
to run a hundred miloBonco. This
I did in twenty six hours. Thoro
woro five hundrod mou in tho
party ou tho "starapedo" to uowly
opened up country.
"Tho Americans aro tho ones
who havo dovelopod tho Klondike
country. Thoy nro tho loadore
and tho best minos nro owned by
them.
"Tho difference iu tho laws
governing Amoricnn and Canadian
territory is vory apparont. Tho
former is woll developed, the latter
out poorly. bUoulcl a man Btako
off n claim on American torritory
aud then fail to comply with tho
regulations, nnothor may stop iu
and filo over him. Should a man
fail to comply with regulations on
Cauadian torritory, the land goeb
back to tho Government aud tho
Government opens up theso places
whou it sees fit, whioh, by tho
w ly, is always put off as long ns
possible
"There nro no doubt splendid
opportunities in tho Klondike.
Thoro nro also disappointments
deep onough to ruin a mau.
