The London Daily Mi.il of ro
cont dato eayB: Norway linn just
como to tho most extraordinary
decision arrived at by any govern
ment for BOtuo time.
Hitherto tho Norwegian flag has
included tho otnblem of union
with Sweden. By a practically
unanimous voto tho Storthing has
now resolved to introduce n Hag
that will tako no cogmsnnce of
Swedon, but will bo purely Nor
wecian.
Tho Storthing consists of lid
members, and tho fact ot thero
having beon only one dissenting
voto when tho motion for the new
flag was adopted, shows the almost
unanimous opinion of tho mem
bers on tho subject, aud also de
monstrates tho indopondent feol
ing that exists toward Swedon.
Up to tho present tho flag of
Norway has consisted of a blue
cross on a red ground, and in its
upper left-hand quarter r small
red, bluo, and yollow design
which is supposed to donotc thu
union with Sweden, it is the
omission of tho latter which will
constitute tho change.
Incidentally it may bo mention
ed that Norway possesses tho
largest mercautilo fleot in tho
world excepting that of England.
