TK HAWAIIAN ANNUAL.
Mr.
Tliriim Iniiei (lunrter Century
Xumlier of Ills llnmlliook.
Thoiuns G. Thrum, tlio veteran
publisher mill statistician, has
justifiable reason to bo proud of
bis Hawaiian Annual for 1899.
it is tho twenty-fifth issue of that
handbook, a publication that has
boon invaluable in two important
ways tho furnishing of correct
information about tho Hawaiian
Islands to tho outer world, ond
tho fulfilling of tho functions of n
comprchonsivo roforonco book to
people of all callings within tho
islands. Thero is a third, and a
permanent value, to tho annual as
a continuous historical record of
Hawaii.
Tho present ono being au auui
vorsary numbor; its editor has
mado tho historical featuro pro
uouueed. It discounts any pre
vious issuo in tlio scope of its
statistics. This is well, for moro
rpRcons than one( With this year
Hawaiian statistics complete an
ora of the country. That is tho
era of its osistonoo as a separate,
civilized, national identity. Hence
fotth, tho statistics commercial,
political, industrial, vital will bo
kept differently, and, as it were,
in an entirely new set of books.
Some will bo in Federal or Nation
al books, and others in Local or
Territorial books. To complete
tho statistics of this era, liowover,
tho figures of our commerce and
fiuauces for the closing year
should be added to thoso in tho
Annual. Mr. Thrum may not
tako the suggestion amiss to bring
his copious tables up to the end of
the iudependout era for his uoxt
year's I issue. It would not bo a
bad schemo, either, to gather all
of his historical memorauda into
ono issuo.
"Honolulu in 18"3" is tho great
descriptive articlo of this is6tio.
It is composed of a papor written
by the late Warrou Qoodalo for
tho Hawaiian Historical Society,
referring to a valuablo sories of
old engravings, and a completion
of tho paper after its author's
death by Mr. Thrum. Tho illus
trations tocether with tho letter
press arc of great interest and got
up in attractivo style.
Many articles of information
about Hawaiian events and sub
jects are written by the editor
himself. H. "Waterhouso writes
on "Deep Soa Fishing," Dr. N.
Russel, on "Olaa;" Ohas. 1). Mil
ler, on "Kooa;" J. W. Lronbard.
on "Tho Coffee Outlook in Hama
kua;" C. W. Dickey, on "Pictures
que HomcB of Hawaii," illustrat
ed with au engraving of the resi
dence of T. Clivo Davies;" P. L.
Weaver, on "Allodial Titles in
Hawaii," originally for tho Ynlo
Law Journal; Honry S. Town
send, Inspector General of
Schools, on "Educational Pro
gress and Tendencies," and Wray
Taylor, on "Musical Status of Ha
waii." The editor's .own articles
are, liko the auctioneer's list, "too
numorous to moution," but each is
unit and comploto and full of
meat.
