SUGAR WAR IN CHICAGO
Scene of Activities Changes Once
More to the West.
Immense Amount of Money Lost by
Fight Arbuckle Selling Di
rect to Retailers.
Chicago, Deo. 24. Tbo Tribuno
says: Obioago has becomo the
chief battleground in the contest
between the trust and tho Arbno
klps and tho Doorschors, its pow
erful rivals.
Yestordav the prico of "outeidoe
suctar" was out ono-eighth cont
below trust prices, reaching al
most tho lowest quotation on re
cord. Tho drop was accompaniod
by developments that showed tho
exiatonco of a littlo trust among
wholesalo grocors to sup
port tho sugar trust, ami
also that a now Richmond
was in the field in tho shape of n
beet supar supply. 1 ho trust was
not ready to meet its rivals prices,
but is oxneotod to do so today.
Tho circumstances leading np
to tho cut aro those: Arbucklo
Bros, and tho Doerschors own
sucar refineries on the Atlantio
seaboard that have a daily capaci
ty of five thousand and 3500 bar
rels respectively. Both plants
woro started less than six months
aco and both invaded Chicago
!?ll. il. .1 1 ! II. 1l
wiiu ineir gouuB cuny tu 111a mil.
The trust was ready for them.
In September, seeing that rival
coods woro to bo offored,
its ropreeontatives vibitod tho
jobbing trado and sue
aoBted that n contract bo signed by
which any amount of sugar, up to
a stated quantity, might 00 pur
chased by tho jobber nt a given
price nncl that a low ono. This
was to cut the around from undoi
the trust's rivals, but it was mndo
only to its factors.
Tho latter nro all tho wholesale
grocers except two or three, whoso
arrangement with tho trust pro
vides for a rebate of from ono
eighth to ono-Bixteenth from tho
list price, to bo mado periodically.
Tho Arbuckles and Doerchors
when thov entered .the Chicago
market, made a out in prices. It
did not bring tho expected in
crcaso in sales, as tho jobbers
wore nblo ander their contracts to
draw on tho trust for sugar at tho
same price. The contracts bogan
expiring a short time ago. Boforo
the date wbb reached tho trust's
representatives visited tho factors
and extended tho agreement.
When tho Arbuckles and Doers
chers found this outthoy, on Wed
nesday last announced a cut to
5.20, and coupled with it tho no
tice they would do business direct
with the retail trado. Yesterday
they follow it up with a further
cut to 5.15 a full ono-eighth cont
below tho tiust prico. Tho local
houses of tho Arbuckles and
Doorschers woro bombarded with
business. Salesmen for the jobbers
and wholesalers camo in to report
the market was taken away from
tho trust, that all tho retailers in
Chicago woro dealing with the
opposition. No attempt was mado
to meet tho price, but thoro was
possibly a reason for this. A
mooting of the sugar committeo
was called in tho commercial ex
change, but adjourned until today
when it is expected tho trust price
will be announced.
Ono year ago the difforonco be
tween tho prices of raw and re
fined sugars was about $1.25.
Yesterday it was 34 conts, or
nearly S3 por barrel. If tho
sugar trust's output is 10,000 bar
rels a day, a littlo figuring will
give a fair approximate idea of
too vast sum the tight has cost.
Within tho last week or two
fifteen carloads of boot sugar have
arrivod in Chicago, tho first to
roach this market. This sngar
was sold below the trust nrico. and
it is said arrangements aro mak
ing to handle an output of half a
dozen factories built and building
in .near by states. All these
features croato a situation which
well informed men in tho trado
said pointed to tho conolnsion the
war would bo fought out in thiB
market.
