that General Shafter would arrive
here next Tuesday. Ho will as
soon as bo arrives assume com
mand of tho department.
The Twentieth Infantry will not
arrive hero until about the 26th
inBt. Tho transport Scandia will
not sail until tho 27th, as she can
not he got ready beforo that time.
It is not thouuht that auy more re
gulars besides tho Twentieth In
fantry will be sent to Manila from
this point for the prosnnt. The
Morgan City, which will sail with
thi Scaudia, mmy be used to bring
back returning volunteer troops,
possibly a portion of tho First
California Regimont.
