THE FIRST LECTURE
If the great cities abroad took
up univorsity extension, in pro
portion to their population, with
tbo eamo measure of welcome as
Honolulu did last night, thoro
would bo liability of oxtonnion
turning round and eating np tbo
universities. At tho boar an
nounced for Professor Rolfo's
lecture tbo principal euito of
schoolrooms, extending tbo whole
width of tho High School build
ing, was filled to its utmost
capacity. Chairs by tho scoro
were brought in and placed in tho
cornors and passages, yet many
pooplo had only standing spaoo
and still moro wout away disap
pointed. Professor Ilolfo delivored a
beautiful address on the lifo, the
eesnya and tbo letters of Ohnrlea
Lamb. Ho spoke in a conversa
tional tone, but distinctly nnd'with
ovident feeling for his topics. A
notable thing in tbo lecturer's do
livery is a provalent fulling in
flection, that which school teach
ers two taught to correct in thoir
pupils probably because it seems
to bo natural.
Following tho lecturo on Lamb,
Professor ltolfo Bkotcbod tbo his
tory, explaining tho aims, of uni
versity extontion. Tbo movomont
grow up spontaneously, like many
other great Anglo - Saxon institu
tions. It originated in a series of
locturosi delivered in an English
provincial town, at tho request of
a number of ladies belonging there,
by Professor James Stewart of
Cambridge University twonty-fivo
years ago. Now it was part and
parcel of tho English univorsity
system, not only countenanced but
actively promoted by both Gam
bridge and Oxford.
Professor ltolfo next started tho
ball of university extonsion rolling
in Honolulu, by putting questions
on tho subject of his main looture
to bis audienco. A lively little de
bate was tbo result. Mrs. Mabel
Wing Castlo broke tho ice with a
olearcut criticism. Among others
chiming in, with a pleasant diver
sity of views, woro President Dole,
Professor Scott, Colonel Whyte,
Prof. 0: Jr. Fitz, W. Hall
and Dr. Emerson.
It was stated by Profoasor Rolfo
that a supply of the syllabus of
lectures had not beon reoeived as
expected. Tbo beads of subjects,
however, would bo announced in
tho papers. An invitation was ex
tended to all prosent to attond tho
second lecturo on next Thursday
This houso notwithstanding tbo
numerous counter attractions still
holds its own as a popular rosort.
Last night's show consisted of hum
oruos farcesand tho regular vaudo
