J. Dow, formorly of this town
but now head luna of tho Kihoi
plantation, occasionally makes
a visit to this placo. Ho reports
his plantation making rapid pro
cross and denounces tho rumors
that tho men are leaving the plan
tation on account of soro eyes
from Eihci dust as false fabrica
tions and tho truth is far from it.
Ho reports also a splendid flow of
water from tho now wells, and ho
seems to think that that water is
far superior to Wailukn "ditch
walor. Thero are 350 men on tho
pay roll now.
Several townsmen, Deputy
Shorifl Scott aud Jailor Orowell,
aro still on the siuk list, and At

An attempt is being mndo by
a syndicate to boy out the water
rights of tho natives of Pelekuuu,
Molokai. Some natives havo beou
foolish enough to dispnso theirs,
but othors moro sensible forsoe
the danger of parting with their
water rights, for that has been tho
only means of tboir OHrning a
livelihood these long years and
supplying the leper settlement
near by with paiais. The latter
havo declined to enter into any
proposition whatever by which
they will bo dispossessed of tboir
ancient water rights, for to them
selling thfir water rights would
mean ultimately driviug them away
from their beloved valley for their
taro patches will bo dried up iu
consequence. Thero aro about
thirty natives of both soxes
in this beautiful valley and
almost all of them havo grown up
in tho valley carina verv little to
set tho outside world, excopting a
few who have beou to Honolulu to
see the sights and returned borne
to tell of tho wonders they have
soen in the Metropolis, just as a
traveller proudly relates his
travels in Eypt, Palostino or In
dia. But Pelekunu is a very
healthy placo and its inhabitants
are vory industrious, just as much
as their brethren in Wailuku nnd
Halawn, and aro more euro of
earning thoir daily bread than
inojt of the natives in Honolulu
whore competition, even in the
lowent strata of tho industrial
scale, is very great.
