T h o American
lenders bol loved
that tho Span
iards vecro in
tending to mako
n stubborn fight, iu tho vindication of
their honor, at tbo gates of tho city.
Tbp.troops generally shared this view.
It had been intended up to Jane 34
that Lawton's division tnko a strong do
fensivo position north of Sibnucy land
ing, on tho road to Santiago, that Kent's
division encamp woat of Law ton, while
Whoelor'a division would hold tho road
from Sibonoy back to Dalquori, thus
keeping up land communication between
theso two bindings. Ihcso positions,
within oasyrango of tho navy guns,
wero to havo been maintained until all
tho troops, artillery, transportation
wagons nnd auitnals, rations and am
munition wero safely landed and dis
tributed. Tbo adjutant general of ono of tho
divisions, who was in a position to know
tho inBide of things, told mo at Camp
Wikoff that tho affair nt Las Gnasimas
forced tho rapid movements of tho army
forward upon EI Canoy nnd San Jnan
hill. The capture of that position drow
tho nnny westward to Savilla, whoro
thcro woro excollont camping grounds,
good water, room todoploy tho divisions
and to roccivo tho Spaniards in caso of
attack. It was supposed by many of tho
gonoral officers that tho army would
halt in that camp for somo timoin ordor
to get up artillery nnd put tho wholo
outfit in sbapo for an attack in tho di
rection of Santiago.
In epito of tho efforts of tho staff do
paitmonts it was impossible to land and
transport supplies faster than tho nion
and animals nt tho front consumed
thorn. Tlico was n lack of steam
launches lighters, scows and wharfs.
Tho nnny nevor had a tbroo days' supply
of rations nhcad.
Thcro bad beon much marching and
countonnarcblug to get tho troops into
position, nnd it was very hot. Soldiers
had no changes of clothing. All they
bad with them was n roll containing a
blnnkot, in somo casos a shelter tent,
their arms and havorsacks. Perspiration
soakod thoir underclothing as though
thoy had boun in a bath, and tho fro
quent rains drenchod them on tbo out
side Tho soldiers say that whilo thoy
would not havo minded this stnto of
things ordinarily, yot, following thoir
longvoyngo, it left no tlmo for recupera
tion. Tho extreme bent nnd tlio peculiar
odor rising from tho soil nffocted thoir
appotitos, aud thoy conld not rollsh tho
coarso nnny rations, nor proenro any
thing whatsoever for variety. Thoso
who bad rocourso to tho nativo fruits,
especially tbo mango, paid dearly for it
Tlio mango is n littlo largor than a peach,
nbupod liko a poor. Its moat is coaiso,
liko that of the pumpkin; its rind liko
an opplo, thick and tough. Tbo experi
enced Cubans warned Americans against
eating mangoes, as thoy said thoy con
tained tho germs of fover, but as thoy
wero very cooling to tho throat somo
men, especially tho voluntoors, could
not resist tbo temptation.
Whilo tbo nnny was strung alone tho
Santiago road botwocn Daiquiri and
Savilla, tho region westward toward
Suutiago vtns recounoitercd. Just how
complete, these rcconuoisancos wero 1b n
mystery. I asked tho staff officers nnd
division generals whether it was known
beforehand that tbo approaches to San
Juan heights wero exposod to Spanish
viuw aud firo from their works on tho
crest, particularly tho road and trail at
tho crossing of tbo Snn Juan rivor aud
its tributaries. I could learn nothing.
Tho nuswers wero, "I supposo that this
was kuown at army headquarters."
Tho fnot romalns that on July 1 boforo
tbo battlo opened tho troops found them
selves blocked in tho road and in tbo
bods of tbo streams after daylight with
in view of tho Spaniards and within
rango of thoir small arms.
It was stated that n cortaln gonoial,
who refused to commit himsolf on any
joints likely to lead to controversy, ex
amined tho rogion thoroughly aud roo
ommonded that trails bo cut parallol to
tbo main road and on both sides of it
Gonoral Chaffoo said that tho region
far south of tho road to Santiago was
examined with u view to making an at
taok upon the Punta Gorda battery.
Tho Puntn Gorda battery was tho first
objective thought of after tho army set
its face toward Santiago from tho cast
