Manila, May 8. Only tbo en
treaties of Aguinaldo last Tues
day averted civil war between the
forces of his two rival gonerals,
Luna and Mascardo. They were
actually drawn up in battle array.
This and tho positive confirmation
of tho news that Luna hm been
dauiierouely wounded iu the
shoulder in tho battlo of San
To mil 8 are tho most important
iloms of intelligence brought to
day by the Array gunboats La
gunii de liny rind Covailongn,
which returned today from au ex
pedition up tho San Fernando
rivor.
It was immediately before the
buttle of Sau Toman that the in
surgents so neaily nrrived at the
point of beginning to fxt-rmitnte
ouo another. Gene in I Luna, wlwi
he fiiw tliHt an enpngm nt with
the troops ui inevitrible, hont
back nu ntdo post haste to JJacolor,
whom Goneral Mascardo wus de
mHiidiog re-euforcomeuts. Mns
cardo's reply was that ho would
take order from no one but Agui
naldo. This defiance so infuriat
ed Luna that, in spito of the im
pending conflict with the common
enemy, ho took 15u0of his sol
diery and made a forced march to
Hncolor, intent on chtstiBiug his
0 uirade in arms. Maicardo wan
nothing loth in fight it out and
ordered his command into lino of
battle.
This was tho situation when
Aguinaldo hoard of tho impending
conflict. He ordered his chief of
stHff, Colonel Arguelezs to moke
peace at all hazards. The sol
diers wero waiting for ordora to
begin the onslaught when Ague
lezs galloped between the lines,
frantically waving a flag of truce.
There was an onury conference
betweon him and the rival oeno
rals, and Apuinaldo's authority
dually triumphed, buna return
ed to tho front, after being pro
vided with re-euforcemontR, and
ordered Mascardo to bo court
martialed for not having sent
Uiera at first. Tho battle of Ban
Tomas followed, and Luna, on
whose ferocity in the field Agui
naldo placed his chief reliance,
received wounds that will surely
disable him for tho rest of the
campaign, and may cause bis
death.
