arranging for tho acquisition of
propei ty ahovo tho present plan
tation lands. J. P. Cooke of Alex
ander & Baldwin was seen and, in
response to a question, answered
"It has been tho intention of the
agents of tlio Hawaiian Sugar Co.
ever since tho year 1897 to get, if
possible, somoof the lands niauka
of tho plantation. Tbo matter
was referred to H. P.Baldwin,
President of tho company, and R.
"Tho plantation wished to con
duct upon tho plantation the Ma
kaweli Btiotm. Of course, by tho
plantation, I mean tho lands wo
wished to ocquiro in couneclion
with the Maka well plantation.
"It was found that tho valley
down which the Aliilcawoli stream
flows is ono of tho most prpcipi-
tous and ruggod gorges to be
found in tlio isluuds. Surveys
wero mado for threo possiblo
routes for taking out tho water.
"Since that titno tho Directors
have had the matter under careful
consideration but havo not found
it likely that they csn come to any
satisfactory terms wijh Gay & Ro
binson, the owners of tho land
w7iuted. There has been consid
erable corespondonco in regard to
tho matter of late. I may Bay
that I do not expect satisfactory
terms will bo arranged."

nolulu this morning and bad
among her passengers a Mrs.Phil
hps, who is a school toaohor in
Honolulu. Mrs. Phillips had a
sad piece of news awaiting her on
her arrival. Some few weeks ago
her husband oaraa to San Francis
co and went to Los Angolee, whoro
ho died, and whb buried. There
was no opportunity to send tho
news of his death to Mrs. Phil
lips, and so a letter was put aboard
tho Allen on her arrival, tolling
her of her loss. The poor lady
was coming to California to join
hei husband, and on tho way up
she told the passengers how much
she intended to enjoy her vacation
hero with her husband.

THE "HOFFMAN," corner of Hotel
and Nuuami streets, claims to be the
"Banner" resort for gentlemen and holds
the fine. L. H. Dee, the proprietor, has
attained success In Ills line, by specially
supervising everything connected with his
establishment. He now Introduces to his
patrons "Olympla Beer." This brew Is
from the "Capital Brewing Co." of
Olympla, the capital of the State of
Washington, and was received by the
"Garonne." Mr. Schmidt, the leading
spirit of this corporation Is a practical
Chemist and Brewer, and after years of
search and Investigation located his plant
at Olympla, on account of the peculiar vir
tues of the water of the I urn halls, a
stream that Is noted for Its distinctive qui
titles of clearness, coldness and lack of
mineral and decaying vegetable Impurities.

Washington with the Indians and original
white settlers. The "Olympla Draught"
