Department today from Captain
Barkor, tho naval officer in com
mand at Maniln, announcing the
sudden death of Captain Heury E.
Nichols from sunstroke. Cap
tain Nichols whb tho commander
of tho monitor Monadnock.
Captain Nichols was born in
New York and wont to tho Naval
Acadomy in 18G1. His first ser
vice was ou the Swatara in tho
West Indies nnd in tho European
squadron. Ho became an En
sign in 1800, Master in 1808 and
a Liouteuant in 1809, whon ho
was attached to tho Port Admiral's
ship Frolic in New York harbor.
Other sorvico which followed was
on ordnanco duty in Pittsburg, on
torpedo duly in tho Coast Survey
in 1875 and 1877; on tho Europ
pan station in 1878; again on tho
Coast Survoy commanding tho
HaBsior in 1881 and on tho board
of inspection in 1891, when ho
necamo a Commander.
Ho took command of tho Bon
niugton in 1897 nnd crossed with
her from Honolulu to join Dewey
before Manila In3t July. Ho was
nttaohod to tho Muro Island Navj
Yard for n short time Inst fall and
took command of tho Monadnock
January J 8, 1899. Ho win pro
motod to Captain March U 1 Inst.
