Jeve'r beforo in the history of the
trntln in this oitv. Previous to
1899 tho price of hard wood was

time. This year, howarer, hue

mimoroaa advances h&To put the

The recont status or the prices
is due to the shortago ia tho sup
ply of Northorn grown hard wood
and tho rapidly inoseosing de
mand. . Tho businoss np. to date this
year has been from 35 to 40 pur
cent larger than lost year and
seems to ho on the increaso.
Prices this yeararo from Si to
5 highor than last year. Every,
variety of hard wood has boen
affected and all, havo gono up
above the previous maximum. It
is. possiblo that still further ad
vances will bo made, but this do
pends largely upon tho manu
facturers. A big concern in this city was
ablo to purchase white oak last
year at $22 atbousand feet. Lust
week tho firm offered $32 a. thou
sand for a large amount, but was
told that it could not bavo tho
wood for lees than S34.

great is the rush that tho steam
ship companies admit thoir in
ability to copo with it. All the
transatlantic companies have
ordorod from ono to four new
ships, but it is impossible for
many of those to be ready in 1900.
The American and North Ger

their now vessels to the utmost
limit, but they hardly hope to
havo them ready for the Paris Ex
position. The Atlantic Transport
Company has four vessels averag
ing 12,000 tons in courso of con
struction. They will be GOOfeet
long. The new Lyland liner,
Winifredian, for the Boston trado,
had hor trial today. Even tho
cargo boats are constantly increas
