HAWAII ON THE MIDWAY
Tho Omaha World-Horald o
July 23rd Bays: Tho evening was
roarkod by an event which ranrjy
think will be cousidorod of more
nnd more importance nB tho sum
mer -wears away. This waa tho
opening of tho Hawaiian Village.
Tho management bad been hur
rying to the IfiBt hour tho work of
completing ita haudaomo building
au imitation of the palaoe at
Honolulu which fronts on the
Midway, and the theater in the
rear, juetboyond tho pool, whero
thtf Americans will shortly learu
for tbo first time by actual obser
vation the proficiency in swim
ming for which tho Hawaiiann
are noted.
The tbeator, whilo not yet quite
completed, was attractive enough
to call forth many ozprossionn of
admiration. Tho rear of the stngo
shows a street in the old time oity
of Honolulu, whilo on oithor sido
the scenery is of cocoanut troes
and other tropical vegetation.
xtiongn tno public i? riday night
was delighted with tho part which
tho Hawaiian people took in the
Venetian festival, yet the crowd
which packed the village theater
last night to suffocation was sur
prised at the swfotness and melo
dy of the music furnished. Wind
and string instruments wore made
to givo forth an harmonious com
pauy of sounds of a quality which
porhapa caunot be better describ
ed than by saying that it was
tragrant.
Interspersed were a number
of tho dances bretoforo known on
ly in the raid Pacific islands, and
not one of these was given with
out so hearty applauBO as to com
pel a ropotition. It was demon
strated at once that the Hawaiian
Village will be a winner on tho
Midway.
