YACHT COLUMBIA, A QUEEN
Qreenport, L. I., AagUBt 8.
The first run of tho New York
Yacht Club today from Now Lon
don out into tho Sound as far as
Watch Hill nnd back to Gardiner's
bay, was ono of tho moat success
ful in tho club's history. Not only
was tho day an idoal ono, with a
great whole-sail breeze from the
west which hold through from tho
start to finish, but tho olab watch
ed with pride tho magnificent run
of the new ciuoon of tho fleot, Col-
umuia, wuicu iainy distanced
every other yacht with tho excep
tion of tho Defender, and sho, too,
was defeated by four minutes and
ono second in a thirty-mile race.
Tho old cup defendor, Vigilant,
was beaten by the two fly ore near
ly an hour, but muoh of this was
no doubt due to the fortunate ran
of the Columbia and Dofnnder
along tho Fisher's island shore,
while the rest of the fleet kept
over on tho other side of the
Hound.
Once during the day, just aftor
tho start, tho Columbia seemed inactive-
and lifoless, and the Do
fender olmost got by her. But just
before roachingBace rock tho new
boat seemed to find horself again,
and from tboro she was nevor in
danger, while hor great run on the
last leg will nevor bo forgotten by
those who witnessed it.
A comparison of the work dono
by the two big sloops against tho
Vigilant, which finished at 3:27 45,
shows that while finishing 27 min
utes and 46 seconds bohind the
Columbia, plus 26 minutes and 22
seconds of a lead aboad of the
Columbia, tho Vigilant was beaten
by 54 minutes and 8 seconds ovor
a courso of thirty and one-half
miles, and that she was beaten 40
minntos by the Defendor.
What chance has the Shamrock,
say the expect calculators, if tho
Vigilant was ablo to beat the Bri
taunia at auy time ?
