PLEADS 'TWAS SELF-DEFENCE
Wailuku, August 19. Yong
Nook Yce, held for murder of Lbo
See, the Kuln corn plnntor, is now
in, Wailuku jail. Ho was fouud
by Sheriff Balowin and Deputy
Shor'iff King of Mukuwao at Pu
lohu, Kula, last Saturday. Pu
lohu is in tho Kola district and
distanced about six miles from the
scene of tho murder.
Nook Yee wns put under arrest
being suspected as the man who
had killed Lee See, and was
brought to Kahului jail. While
at tho latter place and for st-veml
days, tho prisoner would not ad
mit having committed tho deed,
but made a strong denial of hav
ing any connection or over having
heard of such an affair.
Ah Mi, tho prominent wealthy
Ohinaman of Kula, was allowed
to see th6 prisoner for the purposo
of getting from him some clue an
to the' mnrder. At first Nock Yeu
persisted in saying that be knew
nothing about tho murdered man,
but after a time he admitted hav
ing committed tho doed and said
that ho did it in eolf-defense.
Altho Nook Yee had told ninny
different stories, tho following
is ono of thorn:
On the evening of Wednesday
the 9th inst., when he left his
house ho told his folks that he
was going to Leo See to got eomo
ducks; .Nock Yeo is a notorious
thief and his folks know ho was
going to etoal tho ducks bo tbiy
porsuaded him not to go as he
would only got in trouble, but the
warnings wero of no avail and he
wont on his mission.
Sometime between 11 and 12
o'clook that uight, the prisoner
said, he got outside of Lee See's
place at' Hula aud a battle of clubs
soon ensued bbtwoen them. Nook
Yee said that Lee Seo assaulted
him with a knife and olub, aud
that in self-defense ho got hold
of Lee' See's club and with his
own knife cat his assailant's hand
but not before he rooeived a blow
in the head from Lee See's club,
and Nook Yoo is still nursing the
cut he received from that blow.
It was in this scufllo that Nock
Yoo overpoworpd Lee See, knock
ed bim down and then stabbed
him on the chest, and then fled
for safety. The murderer
thought at first that his victim
wot only partially injured and
never expected that it was fatal;
for be, said, bad he known that
Lee See was dead, be would bavo
takon his dead body to soma lone
ly place and concealed it so that
no body, not oven our over wide
awake sheriff, would over find tho
Nook Yee is now languishing
in Wailuku jail and the ohargo of
murder has beon placed against
bjm. He is a small man, under
five feet, and appears weak and
feeble that no one would ever take
him for a desperate murderer.
When tho charge of murder was
read to him this morning, Nook
Yee cried as a baby and said that
be knew nothino about the mur
The knife with which Leo See
was slabbed has not been found.
Sheriff Baldwin will hold a
coroner's inquest next Monday.
When Nook Yee was placed under
arrest by the sheriff, he could not
get a single Ohinaman in Kula to
testify either for or against the
murder, for if there was anything
they abhored it is appearing as a
witness in a murder case that
wonld takn thorn away from their
farm for days and perhaps, for
weeks without adequato remuner
ation therefor. Tho sheriff has
suocoodod in obtaining about half
a dozon witnesses for tho prose,
