BOOMING TEA CULTURE
Ohicngo, Aur. M. California
will become dovoteii to ten cul
ttiro in the near future if Secre
tary of Ayrioalturo Wilson has his
way.
"Tama Jim" reaobod Chicago
this morning after his lonu West
ern trip, involving businisrt aud
ploasofo. His business was to
eoo where the Agricultural Do
partmeut may help tho Far West
ern agriculturist, and ho says he
had plenty of fun to boot, "I have
seen a great country," said Mr.
Wilson. "I have been up and
down the Pacific Const. I found
great prosperity everywhere and
rt-rrard my tup as highly success
ful. Everywhere I have looked
into tho agricultural needs and
possibilities of tho localities visit-
od. As a scientific agriculturist I
have seen with a trained eye and
been able to draw right cooclu
sions. l am impressed witu tue
agricultural possibilities of the
West, not the least with those of
regions considered semi-atid, and
which will requiro irrigation to
develop them.
"You may know," continued the
Secretary, "that ono of my pet
HcherocB has been tea culture in
the United Slates. This project I
novo nursed in my own mind for
mimy yours. The Depirtmont line
been developing plants at Wash
ington Oily in groat quantities,
and it proposes to distribute in
favorable locations some 14,000,000
shrubs. Oio of tbo chief purposes
of my trip across the Rocky moun
tains was to nod tho soil aud cli
mate that will be favorable to the
culturo of tea. This I did find in
California."
' In what localities, Mr. Wil
son ? " was aoked.
" In sevoral localities," answer
ed tho Secretary. " Just where I
cannot tell you at present. How
ever, I am satisfied that California
has the right soil and climate, and
in abuudanco. Tho Agricultural
Department will push its experi
ments at once."
The Secretary inspected lands
in Washington and Oregon that
have beon overgraz d by cattle
and neglected to such a degree
that uow they are practically n
desert. It is bis desire to seo these
regrasfed. The department has
two experimental garden spotd in
Washington, ono at Yakima, in
which various grasses, both for
eign and domestic, are being pro
pagated.
