Ramon of the Existence of a Big Opium
Smuggling Ring-San Francisco Customs
Officials Investigating Tbat End.
According to tho San Franoisco
pnpers thoro is a largo nmonnt of
opium now in Honolulu of which
tho Custom authorities know
nothiDg.! If thia bo tbo fnot, it ia
rather straugo that tho preeout
prico of tho nrtiole should be so
high.
A Honolulu 'man who is well
acquainted among thoso who aro
in a position to know concerning
opium acquainted a Bulletin re
presentative yesterday with tho
latest quotations on dope.
"The Hongkong nrtiolo is of
course tbo best, and consequently
me most expeusivo saw uu; uuu
the present price of Hongkong
prepared opium is S18 a pound.
$24 for half pound tin; tho stuff
gotten up in Han Franoisoo is
quoted now at S15 a hhlf pound
tin. or 831) a pound."
The Custom House authorities
in Honolulu aro noted for their
thorough and eftioieut work, and
tbo present unusually high price
of the forbidden drug reflects
great credit on their oaro and
watchfulness.
A lareo amount of confiscated
opium is stored away in tbo vaults
of tbo Custom Housrt today: there
it will remain until tbo United
States takos over that deptrttneot
with tho rest of the temporary
government of tho Inlands. Then,
according to Uuited States law,
ths opium will be sold at auction.
Considerable interost has been
excited in Sau Franciuco shipping
circles ovpr what is supposed to
bo the partial discovery of a gig
nutio opium smuggling ring, with
headquarters presumably in Sui
Frauui-co and a branch in Hono
lulu. In an article published in
the San Francisco Cnll, August
i'JUi, we aro informed of the fol
lowing: Thoro aro two vessels engipwi
in tho trade botwoen Honolulu
and tho coast which are ausp'ctod
of
iiHving carneu, uuuuown to
their masiors, largo quantities of
opium on recent trips to Houolu
lu. Tho opium was packod in
coal oil oases. Tho suspected
vessels brought koroseno to tbsf
Islands, and both reached this
port about tho satno time. Tbev
were still in port when thopurobaeor
ot two cases oE what was suppos
ed to be oil, informed tbo polico
that his boxes each contained fifty
pounds of opium.
Humors of tbo exiatonco of an
opium smnpgliug ring aro rife on
the San Franoisco water front.
Othcors of tha suspected vessels
wero of tbo opinion that many of
mo casos wiiiou tlieir vessels car
ried and which were supposed to
coutain keroseue wero in reality
filled with opium, and reached the
Honolulu end of tbo smugglers
ring witunut discovery.
The Call nrlioln coos on to say
that there is scarcely a clow ns to
the identity of tho smugglers at that
end of tho lino: but it is thought
tbat some of tbo employes of a
large oil company in the States
weio concerned.
A largo number of tho oil enses
londed by 0110 of tbo vessels in
oan rrnneisco, wro leit ovi r
uiuht lyiug on the wharf, this was
ilir. cily coutrary to tho law of
California.
The shipping olerk who had
elinrgn of thu lonuing of this
particular ship, received ou tbo
day (if its departuro from the
coHst 200 nasps of Korosoue; he
noticed Fometbiut; peculiar about
the maikiug of tho oases' and his
su-pieinua wero aroused for a
time; it was evident to bim tbat
these cases wo-o marked by some
ouo other tban the regular ship
per nf tho oil company.
The captains of tho suspected
vessels botti declared tbat they
were absolutely ignoraut of tho
manner in which tbo smuggling
was carried out. Tuey reported
to their agents in Honolulu, and
on tueir representation, no in
vestigation was made by tbo ships'
agents.
The San Franoisoo oustoms
nlTicUls have bnen notifiod of the
matter and aro tnkinc stops to
sift the myBtory to the bottom.
