EFFECTS OF CHLOROFORM.
Snoh That llarRlnra Wonlil Not Dae
It un Siecplnir I'enuni.
That burglar's of the more ndrnnccil
typo enn nnd do use chloroform lu thu
coinuilsslou of their crimes Is n belief
widely held nnd rarely contradicted,
nnd yet thero la, curiously, little foun-
uniiou ior it. luuced, thoso who are
most fnmlllnr with the administration
nnd effects of anaesthetics assert that
there Is no foundation nt nil for It ex
cept In the Imagination of sensational
writers and In the needs of people
whoso losses cannot safely be explain
ed by statements of fact. The ques
tion has been raised recently by sev
eral robberies In which chloroform li
snld to linvo been employed, mid opin
ions of the experts are strongly ngnlust
the possibility of such use. One of the
pli. Iclnns Interviewed Is quoted ns
"As far as known chloroform nnd
ether have never taken effect on n
healthy sleeping person without that
person knowing It Doth of these
anaesthetics nre nt first stimulating
nnd Invigorating lu their effect nnd
will nrousc n sleeping person. The en
tire system Is excited, nnd the heart
beats violently and fast The use of
cither chloroform or ether or any oth
er nuncsthctlc by burglars Is absurd.
It frequently takes physicians with
their various appliances from 10 to 15
minutes to put a person under the In
fluence of either of these nuncsthctlcs,
nnd often n patient will become so
stimulated and nctlvo before the ef
fect Is secured thnt It requires several
strong men to hold him."
Tho Idea that the mere Introduction
of chloroform Into a room would cause
unconsciousness wns derided ns ab
surd. Even If doors nud windows
were air tight It would take several
gallons of either nuncsthctlc to so ill)
a room with the heavy fumes as to af
fect n sleeper on n bed of average
height And the Hist effect would bo.
not deep sleep, but excited wakeful
ness. The chances nre, then, thnt
when nnybody claims to have been
chloroformed by burglars there Is
something queer nbout tho case. New
CAMEL'S HAIR BRUSHES.
The Term n MIxticmiiT Ncnv, For
Squirrel. I'lirnUli the llnlr.
The camel's hair brush used by nrt
Ists has nothing of buctrln lu It. There
wns n time when real camel's hair was
used for this purpose. The ship or
the desert, however, has long been su
perseded by the comely squirrel. Not
only Is st-ulu-cl's hair very much less
costiy, but It Is better, softer, more
pliable nnd more durable. At the pres
ent day It Is doubtful If you could llnd
a bushel of camel's hnlr In nil the
brush factories In the land. However,
there Is no cause for fear thnt Un
graceful little squirrel will be extermi
nated. It Is the European squirrel that
furnishes the hair for the brushes, the
covering of the American squirrel be
ing too furry nnd soft for the purpose.
It Is somewhat the same wny with
the coarser brushes. The bristles most
prized come from Itussla nud India,
nnd the wild hogs of Uennnny furnish
their quota. The great American hog
runs to fat and puts forth practically
no bristles. In the countries above
mentioned the collecting of bristles Is
quite an Important Industry among the
pcusantry of certain districts. In com
paratively few cases are they strip
ped from tho dead body of the hog.
The usual method Is to discover the
haunts of the animals and to gather
the bristles from the trees against
which they rub themselves. New
The Woman and the Cnr.
It's a strange thing about women and
cable cars when the time comes for
them to part. A muu or a boy will Just
naturally drop off the car and start
along the street as If nothing hud hap
pened, but let a woman attempt to
emulate his example nud sad work
does she make of It. Even a rainy
liny costume doesn't help her out much,
for skirts have little to do with her
bungling method of leaving the car.
It Is n mntter that cannot be explained
so easily ub can her Inability to throw
a ball, for In the latter case anatomy
Is at fault.
Sometimes she puzzles over It her
self, but la the majority of cases she
gives the matter no thought, hut sim
ply rises, grasps the railing, nnd.
whether the car Is nt n standstill or
In motion, steps oir backward. Some
one should be nble to offer a reason
uble explanation of the very apparent
fact that her Impulse lu thnt ense Is to
do the Incorrect thing. Even when she
carefully studies the subject nud trains
hcrbclf to face in the same direction In
which the car Is moving It never
"scums natural" to her. New York
