OF THE MAORIS
Wbornbiko Ruwoi, who gives
musical and descriptive recitals
illustrated with limelight scenery
at tho Y. M. 0. A. ou Monday and
Thursday evenings next, was in
troduced by Prof. Scott to tho
pupils of the High Sobool yester
day afternoon and gave a delight
ful impromptu talk on tho sup
posed origin of tho Maori race.
Among other things Rawei
stated that the Maoris are not tho
aborigines of New Zealand
where tbey originally oamo from
had always boen a debatable
question among soiontifio men.
Tno natives themselves havo sev
eral traditions bearine ou the
subject, all moro or leBS iutorost-
iu(! ,anu romantic One of the
most feasiblo was as fellows:
Ngahue To Kupo. a native
priest, living on an island called
Hawaiki (supposed by Europeans
to be Hawaii), incurred tho dis
pleasure of tho ruling chief and
was compelled to iloo for his life;
securing a onnoo and stocking it
with provisions, bo paddled out to
sea, leaving home and friends as
ho imagined for over, and was
mourned as doad by his sorrow
ing relatives; but many moons
later, to the iutenso surprise of
tho islanders, ho roturned with a
glowing account of a wonderful
country he had discovoroil. In
graphic langungo ho described its
uugn iprusis, us uuruing moun
tains,, its steaming lakos, and
gigautio birds. His story caused
the wildest oxoitoment among tho
inhabitants, who now regarded To
llupe as a god, nnu preparations
wore at onoo mado to explore this
land of marvels. Seven largo
canoeo wore constructed and nam
ed aa follows:
The Aotea, Arawa, Tainui, Ma-ta-Atua,
Takaturau, Tbkomaru and
Kurahaupo. These woro ladon
with provisions and water, and at
length, all being ready, an adven
turous party, gmdod by To Kupo,
sot forth, eventually arriving at
their destination. To Kupo'a ca
noe, the "Aotoa" was tho first to
leaon tho land, beuco tho Maori
name "Aotoaroa"' wiib given by its
occupants to Nov Zealand.
At wnat period this took place
(said Rawoi) is one of thoso inter
esting ovents in connection with
their history rhioh havo been lost
in tbo dim vista of tbo past. But
tho Maoris of the preBont day in
variably refer to Hawaiki as the
fatherland of their race. Henco
tho native proverb, "I kuno mai i
Hawaiki to kuno kai te kuno tau
gata," "The seed of onr coming
is from Hawaiki, the birthplace of
The tradition, with othor events
conneoted with tho people, has
bocd handed down from fathor to
son through countless generations.
Rawei remarked that the dis
tance separating Hawaii from Now
Zealand was only 3810 miles, and,
that there was an unbroken obain
of islands 'all along tho route, bo
this nativo tradition as to their
origin was at least within tho
bounds of probability.

Foed your nerves, also, if you
would havo them strong, Tho

Pictutes are always attrac
