busy today repairing tho Sham,
rock' gaff topsnil. Tho spars
were eont to tho yard early in tho
morning, and W. D. Diekey, man
uger of tho plant, was asked to
hurry tho work required. Tho
collapsed racing gaff had to bo re
palled, as there wbb no duplicate
of it among tho numerous spurs
ppnt over by Mr. Fife. Tho yard
official put somo of their boat
machinists on the job, but could
not promise to oomploto it for
two or three days.
Under theao circumstances,
which Mr. Fife partly anticipated
it was decided to lengthen tho old
gaff to tho aizo of tho racing spar,
so that tho yacht could have a
trial tost tomorrow over a logged
pff course As tho yacht'B prac
tico spins in American wators
havo boon limited, Mr. Fifo is
now becominc somewhat anxious
aud will tako advantage of every
suitable day until tho oraft is
docked to put hor in thorough
racing shape,
Both tho racing gaff and that
used on the old mainsail aro of
nickel stool. In the gaff that col
lapsed and which is now being
repaired the steel is three-sixteenths
of an inch in tbiokness.
ThiB gaff is sixty-seven feet long
to an loch, which, although formi
dable enough, is five feet lees
than experts and wiseacres had
estimated it. As tho old gaff was
sixty-three frot ten inches long,
tho addition givon to it is throe
feet two inohes. These figures
give an inkling of tho extont to
which Mr. Fife has inoroased the
area of tho Shamrock's mainsail
since sho was sailed with tho cut
ter Bribnnia.
Both gaffs aro made aftor tho
manner of an old-fnshionod stove
pipe, and havo no iueido bracing.
