THE COSMICAL THEORY.
Sclentlflo Iilea of Hott the World I)e
velopeiL. Tho cosmlcal theory, which may bo
said to bo the most generally accepted
by scientists at tho present time, Is
substantially as follows: That the orig
inal uebulao In a vast npaco of time
became condensed by gravity and radi
ation Into a scralgnscous and scmlllq
uld globe, and, cooling, caused n solid
crust to form upon the surface. Steam
and other gases which had been
thrown olt front tho seething mass
were precipitated In the form of water
font-lining Immense quantities of solids
In solution, theso solids falling to the
bottom of tho liquid coverlupof the
globe, nnd thus In ages becoming a
solid shell of primordial rock. Internal
tires, still burning, heaved tho weaker
portions of that shell up hito stupen
dous mountain ranges, above the level
of the waters. Continents were thus
formed nnd reformed from tho ma
terial of those mountains by the later
action of tho waves and glaciers. Fol
lowing this, a an Inevitable sequence,
forms of vcgctablu life, which could
cling to rock and derive their food
from air, grew tipon tho barren land
thus created, and higher vegetable ob
jects grew out of their lower predeces
sors, after which came higher vegeta
ble life, that fed, lived nnd developed
upon tho llfo which preceded It New
Hell It 11 iik lijr Air.
Ail elaborate compressed air anil
electrical system for ringing tho chimes
In St. Patrick's cathedral, Now York
city, has recently been Installed, nnd Is
operated by a single stage nlr com
pressor with a normal speed of 150
revolutions per minute, connected by
gearing with an electric motor. The
compressor works to a pressure of SO
pounds to tho square Inch, and there
arc several reservoirs In which tho nlr
Is stored before It Is ndralttcd to the
operating cylinders. Tho tongues of
the bells are connected each with n
cylinder, tho clappers being double
antl balancing each other. Tho piston
rod of tho air cylinder Is attached to
a central stud projecting below the
center of tho clapper, and when tho air
Is admitted to tho cylinder the piston
moves forward and a blow Is struck.
Tho weight of tho clapper antl a spring
serve to bring It back to Its normal po
sition. Thero Is provided In tho sac
risty of tbo cathedral a keyboard,
where, by an electric circuit, electro
magnets nro excited, which open the
air valves. Tho apparatus Is now be
ing adjusted, but so complete Is the
design In nil Its details that It will
surely nfford a most satisfactory meth
od of operating tho chimes, which In
clude 10 bells, ranging In weight from
7.000 to 300 pounds. New York Post-
