GEN. FUNSTON AGAIN
A HONOLULU VISITOR
Brigadier General Funston, tho nrmy
lipro of the wnr In the Philippines, Is n
passenger In tho transport Indiana,
which nrrlved from San Francisco Sun
dny, en route for Manila.
When Interviewed by a Bulletin rep
resentative Genoral Funston said:
"Tho attacks made upon mo by various
nowspapcr organs of the United States
nro too well known by tho people at
largo to need recapitulation. Tho sum
and substanco of them being that I
personally and also my men looted va
rious Catholic churches In and around
Manila. Tho gravest Insinuation
against me was that I removed from an
Image of the Virgin, In tho church of
Caloocan, n gold embroidered robe
valued at a thousand dollars and nlso
permitted my men to take whatsoever
they could find.
"Now, the fact of the matter la this,
when wo took tho church nt Caloocan
on February 10th, It had already been
occupied as a barracks by tho Filipinos,
ns were nearly all tho churches, and
outsldo of what rudo furniture was left
In the church there was nothing worth
fifty cents. And ns for tho soldiers,
some mny lmvo taken small things, but
very few men wcro loading themselves
down with plunder when In the major
ity of cases they wero throwing their
extra clothing awny to escape carry
ing too much weight.
Most ot the church property thnt
was carried to tho United States by
soldiers, wits purchased by them from
Chinese Junk dealers In Manila for lit
tlo or nothing. The Chinese having
undoubtedly obtained them from the
Filipinos and had them on salo ns cu
rios and souvenirs.
"Tho wholo mnttcr gained promi
nence through my making statements
concerning tho morality and general
actions of Spanish friars In tho Philip
pines In an address mado to tho stu
dents of Stanford University ot Cali
fornia. "Two Catholic organs, tho Monitor
and Donahoe's Magazine, took excep
tion to my remarks and maliciously
and bitterly attacked mo, and publish
ed statements as furnished them by
one Thomas Fox who claimed to have
been In Manila as a nowspapcr corres
pondent and gave accounts of my al
'My address was not nn attack
against tho Catholic church, as I nm
liberal and broad enough to reel kindly
toward every denomination.
"As for this Thomas Fox, ho was not
n newspaper correspondent at Manila,
although for a short tlmo ho had the
caro of tho carrier pigeons of Bass &
AicCutcheon, was a sort of a chamber
mam to them. Most of tho tlmo ho was
a racro camp follower and wn8 throe
times arrested and tried by tho Provost
Court. I myself putting him under ar
rest at Manila. He got to Manila part
of the way, as fireman on tho Indiana,
acserting nt Honolulu, Anally complet
ing his trip by stowing away on tho
Pennsylvania. On his return to tho
States It was as a stowaway on tho
Tartar whoro ho refused to work when
ordered to do so; ho was put In the
brig and kept tnero on bread and water
for two weeks, still refusing to work
his way back.
"I regret very much the attitude I
took when thoso attacks wero mado
upon mo, but they wero so malicious
and uncalled for that I could hardly
resist resenting them. I felt that It
would have been moro dignified If I had
Ignored them to a certain oxtont and
sought Justification through tho courts.
This I propose doing upon my return
and will mako the Monitor, Donahoo's
Magazlno nnd a couplo of Eastern pa
pers pay dearly. I will bring suit
through the Federal courts and under
stand mo It will not bo for tho money
that Is In it, but it will bo for tho prin
ciple of tho thing. This would havo
ueen dono beforo my departure but I
could not remain to give my personal
"Two days before I left San Fran
cisco Father McKlnnon of tho First
California Volunteers, now chaplain In
the regular army. In a public address
vigorously defended mo against tho at
tacks made by the Catholic papers and
other people. Ho declared thcro was
not a word ot truth In tho accusations,
as ho himself was there and could
vouch for their being false. This de
fense from Father McKlnnon I greatly
appreciate and will never forget"
General Funston was given a royal
welcome at his old homo In Kansas on
his roturn to tho United States, and as
soon as tho active campaign Is over In
tho Philippines ho anticipates return
