diana as a chartered transport and, be
ing n slow boat and encountering very
heavy weather, it necessarily dclnyed
her still longer. Sho left San Fran
cisco November 23, ten hours beforo tho
Ohio, which arrived hero last Saturday
morning. Sho brings threo.days' mall
and has quite n largo passenger list of
officers en routo for Manila, among
whom Is Brigadier General Funston.
Company F of tho 40th Infantry is on
bonni nnd is to bo commanded by Cap
tain Paul Smith, of Honolulu, who will
Join his regiment hero and proceed to
Manila. Tho company Is mado up of a
flno lot of men and Is very highly spok
en of by all tho officers of the battalion.
Every ofllcor ot tho 40th in tho In
diana has seen service either in Cuba,
Porto Rico or the Philippines. There
arc altogether on board 41 ofllccrs nnd
749 enlisted men. The officers nro as

count of whoso arrival and mission to
these Islands was published In Satur
day's Bulletin, Is now ut anchor In port
near tho Iroquois. She is a beautiful
vessel, looking more like a plcasuro
yacht than a steamer In tho Govern
ment service, rcadv in timo of need to
bo turned into a man-of-war. Sno was
built under the supervision of Rear Ad
miral HIchborn, Chief Constructor of
tho United States Navy, i-nd launched
December 7, 1893, ut Ellzabethport, N.
J. Sho has been stationed nt San
Francisco for some months, having
mado her trip around the Horn during
tho months of Juno nud July.
Tho Pathfinder Is (ho finest vessel in
tho Geodetic Survey service, her di
mensions being: Water line 1C8 feet,
overall 19G feet, cxtrcmo breadth 33
feet, C Inches, mean draft 13 feet; her
displacement is C90 tons net nnd her
average speed is II knots i:n hour. She
carries no nrmamena nl present, but In
the near future four r.mall guns will bo
mounted.
Tho Geodetic Survey officers aro not
ot the Navy, receiving their pay direct
from tho Treasury Department nt
Washington, while tho crew nrodn tho
service of tho Navy, receiving their pay
from tho usual soure.; of nil naval men.
Tho Pathfinder will ltninln among
tho Islands until next spring, leaving
for Hllo next Friday. After her work
In finished hero sho will proceed to tho
Aleutian Islands.

nnd wrapped in rags saturated with
keroeeno oil nnd then set on Arc to con
ceal all traces of murder. Ten dollars
In halves wero found under the body of
the dead Chinaman.
Sheriff Baldwin has offered n reward
ot $300 for information that will lead
to tho conviction of tho perpetrator of
this foul deed, but so far the murderer
has not been found. Pu, a natlvo, Is
under arrest on suspicion only.
