KcstiYCirs Second Plantation,
The mutual report of, tlio Kona Su
gar Company for tlio )ear ending Sept.
30, 1899, linH been Issued. It Is a de
light to tho omccrs nml stockholders
nnd contains much matter of general
public Interest. J. M. McChesnoy is
president of tho corporation nnd F. W.
McChcsncy Is treasurer. Tho secre
tary Is D. O. White. J. S. Walker Is
auditor. Thcro aro two vlco presi
dents, W. L. Hopper and W. W. Hall.
Tlio manager Is J. Cocrpcr, who en
Joys tho reputation of being an econo
mist and ono of tho bent farmers In tlio
country.
Thcro was sccuicd hero for tho use
of this plantation a mill of tho produc
tive capacity of flfty tons dally. An
other plant to roplaco this has been
ordered nnd tho now outfit will glvo
125 tons of tho raw Btigar per twenty
four hours. In Konn grinding can be
carried on practically throughout tho
year and en no can bo ripened during
almost any mouth that tho manager
may plan. This affords a mill advan
tage that means an Immense saving.
Among other facts, Manager Cocrpcr
presents these:
"A largo part of tho 189S plant has
been cut for seed; of tho growing cano
about three-fifths Is of tho Lahalna va
riety nntl two-fifths Rose Damboo and
Yellow Caledonia, planted at an eleva
tion of from GOO to 2200 feet; 20 acres
at 2S00 feet elevation nro looking
splendidly. Tho growing cano all looks
well, ana persons lsltlng tho planta
tion all speak of Its healthy appear
ance. Owing to a considerably lurgcr
area being planted than at first In
tended, soma ICO extra laborers aro at
work nsslstlng tho various companies.
All tho companies .iro working satis
factorily, ami, 60 far, no difficulty has
been had with them, and all seem
pleased. Advances to plnutcrs, have
been somo J7.000 less for tho year than
estimated, nnd thouirca planted somo
780 acres larger. Other estimates, as
mado In tho company's prospectus,
show an Increase, mainly on account
of mill cost, seed cano nnd fertilizer.
"Thcro nro now 4,000 acres of cane
land in tlio proporty and this will soon
00 Incrcnsed by 2,000 acres.
"Tho area of cano planted during
tho season has been 1,515 acres, whlcn
with 190 acres ratoon and SO ncrcs of
plant rnno of 1898, gives n total area
of l,78"i acres growing. There Is n to
tol of CS companies now planting, con
sisting of 2G2 men; of theso, 33 com
panies of 80 men are Bltuated at Kal
naliti, nnd 35 companies of 182 111011 nt
ivailtm. Divided by natlonallcs, thcro
nro 49 Japanese. 3 Chinese, 12 Portu
guese nnd 10 others. Tho 80 acres
abovo will bo ground commencing in
February next, and should yield somo
500 tons of sugar."
Tho expert report of Jns. T. Taylor,
consulting hydraulic engineer, who
was called to pass upon "tho storago
of water for tho Ilumlng of cano, mill
purposes, etc.," hns pertinent features.
Ho writes:
"Tho rainfall In tho district ranges
fiom 70 to SO inches per annum nnd Is
undoubtedly sufficient to mature the
sugar cano planted from, sny, COO to
3.000 feet in elevation above tho sea.
Tlio slopes from tho cano fields to tho
mill aro too steep to ndmlt of tho usual
methods of hauling tho cano by wa
gons nnn portablo inilroads at a rea
sonable cost, so that tho ilumlng of tho
enno Is tho most fcnslblo method, pro
viding n supply of water tan bo stored
during tho wet season for threo of four
months during tho dry season, mak
ing It possiblo to grind tnno continu
ously if deslied."
A slto for n lescrvolr of 21.500,000
gallons holding is designated by the
engineer, who adds thnt:
"Tho capacity of this lcservolr onco
filled would bo sufficient, with proper
ly constructed flumes, to convoy 700
ncres of cano to tho mill, furnishing nt
tho samo tlmo water for mllllug nnd
for Irrigation after wasting from tho
mill. Tho slope of tho country is so
great that V flumes can bo constructed
on grades that will reaulro a minimum
volumo of water for flumlng."
Tho ropoit of Treasurer F. W. Mc
Chesnoy shows acquisition of fine cano
land In considerable bodies, nt figures
that nro astonishingly low. From tho
samo sourco It Is learned that tho cor
poration is In oxcellent shape financi
ally. This plantation is In North Kona.
W. It. Castlo and associates nro or
ganizing a, plantation for South Kona.
It will bo an estate of unwnrds of 5.0ti(i
or C.OOO acres. Actlvo operations will
begin next month. Tho conduct of
theso two concerns will placo tho dis
trict in tho sugar producing rank that
Ib and ngricultuinllsts havo long
claimed It should occupy.
