ADVICE FR0M m B0ARD
Omco of tho Hoard of Health, Hono
lulu, December Ulli, 1899.
Plague, tailed nlso Asiatic plague, or
bubonic plague, is mi Infectious and
contagious disease, cnpablo of commu
nication from tho nffectcd person to
nnother by bodily contact, and this
may occur during nny stngo of tho dis
ease. It mny nlso bo commmunlcated
by means of tho excretions from tho
sick, such ns saliva, phlegm, sweat,
ami tho dlschnrges from tho bowels
nnd bladder; nlso by tho blood nnd
ranttcr from abscesses and sores. Thb
material that causes tho dlseaso Is
thcreforo likely to bo contained In tho
clothing, dressings nnd bedding, etc.,
that havo como in contact with tho
sick; dishes and utensils that havo
been used by tho sick aro nlso foul.
In order to produco Its effect on the
human body It must gain nccesss to
tho blood, Juices and soft parts of tho
Interior, nnd In tho great majority of
cases Its door of entrnnco is through
tho delicate and moist membrane of
tho mouth, nose, eyes, etc., or through
Bomo cut, scratch or abrnded skin sur
face on any part of tho body.
PERIOD OK INCUBATION.
Tho period of Incubation, during
which tho evil remains quiet In tho
body nnd makes no sign, mny bo as
short as two days or perhaps less, ,or It
may continue flvo days or even longer;
but five days Is generally regarded as
tho limit of this period.
MUST SYMPTOMS.
The earliest symptoms of plague,
though varying somewhat In different
enses, are likely to bo marked by head
ache, a sensation of fulness in the
head, dizziness, n feeling of great wear
iness and languor, paleness of the faco,
and perhaps even a staggering gait;
thero may also bo nausea nnd vomiting
nnd perhaps dlrrhoea; or tho op-poslte
condition mny prevail In tho bowels,
that of constipation. Tho eyes aro of
ten bloodshot and tho surfneo of tho
body mnv lin nrrwtmt !. i,iii,
and patches of n red or purple color.
iiucr a snort time, vnrylng In length
from ono to two days, fovcr may set

body.

detrimental and to bo avoided, nnd tho

The experience of other lands
teaches that the clean, tho temperate,

aro advised to tako tho precaution to
