NOTABLE SON OF THE SOIL
Daid ttowmd Hitchcock's death at
Hllo, Island ot Hawaii, on Monday,
Dec. 12, removed from the scene of
earthly existences and ncthlty a man
wh6 did well his part. There were
combined and nicely balanced In his
ego moat of thoso distinctive, often illy
defined and somctlmo mysterious
qualities which so aptly or well fit tho
trite description "A strong man." To
begin with ho was God-fearing nnd he
feared no human being. Ho was a
devout, earnest Christian, standing
four square, to nnd before tho whole
world, yet neither parading his reli
gion nor assuming nny nlr of holiness
or virtue. He accepted tho Holy Writ
as an Inspired volumo and tho Christ
as the Saviour. Ho even endeavored
quietly, consistently nnd with the stur
dlncss of true faith nnd belief to prac
tice and exemplify nt all times, in nil
places and on alt occasions, without
affectation, in n spirit and manner not
to bo questioned or criticised, his
ideals of genuine dlsclplcshlp to tho
Lord Ood of Hosts. His was of tho
kindliest of nnturcs and thero seemed
to bo harmony nnd peace with him nnd
about him always, hiover relaxing in
effort for the benefit of thoso Immedi
ately surrounding him, planning nud
acting nnd laboring continually for tho
betterment of his neighbor, his com
munity nnd mankind In general, David
Hownrtl Hitchcock was ono of the full
stature of usefulness nnd intelligent
Industry. As boy and man, In public
life, as tho counsellor of rulers of the
land or tho humblest wayfarer, as tho
JUDQK DAVID HOWARD
maglstrate, as tho attorney, as tho
c.iurch identity, as tho farmer he car
ried that priceless Jewel, tho unreserv
ed confidence, witn tho highest re
spect ot nil with whom ho enrao in con
tact. Wlillo for many, many years
ono of public position and inlluenco ho
loved his homo life. Whether in tho
beautiful mansion at Hllo with its
nmplo grounds, or closo to naturo still
on his suporb estate In Olaa, whero ho
becamo n perfect typo of tho varying,
idcal.a gentleman ot tho country. His
..ospltality was unbounded nnd of tho
sort that one feels as genuine.
Deccaseu was born nt Honolulu, May
29, 1832. His parents were mission
aries who came to tho group with ono
of tho sovcral pioneer bands making
that rcmarkablo voyage In small craft
"Around tho Horn" from tho Now
England locality. Most of their work
was done on tho Island of Molokal,
whero tho name of Hitchcock Is to this
day the talisman that commands or
rather causes to bo offered freely the
best and fullest services of nny nnd
all natlvo Hawallans.
David Howard Hitchcock wns an
alumnus of Oahu College, "Puna
hou Doy." Ho was nt school nwuy out
mere beyond tho plains In tho good,
rich old days when tho facilities were
rather crude but tho desire to rccelvo
knowledgo' nnd tho Intention or effort
to Impart it wero keen as consecra
tion to work could Insure. Leaving
Dolo hall nnd Rice nail nnd tho com
panionship of boys who have since
wrought out notablo careers In this or
other lands, David Howard Hitchcock
made tho slow and perilous Journey to
Ynnkceland and martlculated at Wil
liams Collcgo In Massachusetts, as his
father had done before him. It wns
strango nnd novel and lonesome, but
broadening and glorious for scopo and
opportunity and tho youth was a model
student. Ho graduated In 1855 and re
turned at onco to tho Islands.
Tho old homestead at Molokal was n
good placo to contlnuo tho study of
law aftor tho start in reading had been
mado on tho Malrilnnd and a full sup
ply ot essential volumes purchased. It
was a tribute to tne mentality ot tho
young man and to tho mothods ot Wll-
