. AN APPEAL TO Till. PUBLIC
Dear Countrymen: It Is In accord
ance with a resolution, unanimously
adopted at n meeting ot Africander
and Bond members of Parliament, that
wo address you ns follows:
Notwithstanding tho most strcnitocs
efforts mado by our clergymen, our
ministers, our party in Parliament, o'ur
Bond branches, and our mowen, by
means ot respectful petitions, rublic
meetings, nnd by other means to pre
scrvo tho invaluablo blessings of pcaco
In South Africa, the much dreaded war
has virtually broken out.
Her Majesty's forces will soon be
involved In a bloody war with the
burghers of tho Transvaal nnd tho
Freo State, whoarc one with tis In re
ligion, language, and descent
Thero aro but few Colonial African
ders who nro not bound to tho Inhaol
tnnts of both Republics by tics ot re
lationship, Intimacy or friendship.
This makes war still moro painful to
you and to us, and much moro calami
tous to South Africa than it would
otherwlso bo.
It Is not our object to Inquire too
whom all thl3 misery and calamity
which await our country, owing to the
existing circumstances, are duo.
Enough acrimony exists without such
inquiry. Much moro does It befit us
to yield to tho overpowering Impulse
which Alls tho heart ot our pconlo with
a desire to do something In aid of our
kinsmen and friends beyond tho Orango
and vaal rivers, by giving It nn op
portunity to express Itself in some
legitimate manner In work nnd deed. ,
What may, what can wo Colonial Af
ricanders do In this sorrowful time?
Join In tho work of warfaro with tho
weapons? Tho law nnd our duty ns
British subjects forbid this, even
should other circumstances not oppose
such a course of action.
Bu twhnt neither tho law nor the
duty of tho subject forbids, nnd whut,
moreover, agrees In every respect with
all principles of religion and human
ity, is the offering ot help to tho
wounded, to tho widows and tho or
phans. If you aro In earnest In your expres
sions ot sympathy with your brothers
and sisters in those parts, you will
mako sacrifices in favor of thoso men
who will bo wounded or mutilated on
tho field of battle, nnd for the sako ot
thoso wives and children who will be
robbed ot their only support In life by
sword or bullet.
Wltn that object in view wo entreat
you to subscribe to tho appended Hut,
and to do so with unstinted liberality.
When the war Is concluded there will
bo hundreds, perhaps thousands, ot
widows and orphans left quite unpro
vided for, It Is chiefly on their bo
half that our party In Parliament np
pcal to you. Largo sums of money
HI bo needed to provide them, even to
a slight extent, with tho necessaries
of life.
Lot each one, therefore, contribute,
and not only a trlflo, as If it wero for
an ordinary matter, but to the utmost
ot his or her means; oven thougn ho
or sho should have to deny himself or
herself somo pleasure or other for a
long time to come.
Provision will be mado to prevent
the abuse ot your donations.
Mr. C. C. do Villlors has kindly un
dertaken tho duties of hon. treasurer
of tho committee.
Qlve liberally and speedily. Open
subscription lists In each district and
each field cornetcy, nnd appoint col
lectors to call upon each Inhabitant to
solicit contributions, so that nu person
bo omitted.
Convinced that wo have not appealed
to, you In vain, and trusting that an
all-wlso Providence may beo tit speed
ily to tcrmlnato the calamity ot war
In South Africa, we Buba:ribo our
selves with duo respect your obedient
servants,
