Otis' cablegram Is as follows:
"Manila, Jan. 2o. Schwan concen
trated 30th Battalion, 37th and 39th
Infantry at and near San Pablo, Lacu
na province, on tho afternoon of tho
20th, Hayes with cavalry striking for
Tnyabns by lower road. Tho enemy
had advanced from Santa Cruz to very
strongly fortified positions at San Di
ego, Majayjny and adjacent points In
country very broken and mountainous,
bchwnu struck tho enemy nt San Di
ego and In an engagement lasting two
hours killed eighty-two nnd wounded
a largo number. Our casualties were
ono enlisted man killed and fourteen
wounded, Including thrco native
scouts; captured several rifles, ammu
nition, bolos and stock of uniform
clothing. On tho 22d Schwan pushed
on through to Llllo, driving enemy
back on Mnjayjay, whero n forco re
ported by an escaped Spanish prisoner
to number between fifteen hundred nnd
threo thousand well equipped and sup
plied had concentrated waiting np
proach of troops. This position was

flank of enemy, when tho enemy re
treated rapidly with 30th Infantry and
