text of General Ilullcr's dispatch, dated
Sncarmnn's Cnnit. Saturdny, Jnnuary
27tli, C:lO p. m. "On January 20th
Warren drovo back the enemy and ob
tained possession of the southern
crests of the high tablo land extend
ing from tho lino of Acton Homes nnd
Hongcrspoort to tho western Lady
smith hills. From thcro to January
iGtn they remained In close contact with
tho enemy. Tho enemy held a strong
position on a range of small kopjes
stretching from northwest to southeast
across tho plateau from Acton Homes,
through Splon Kop to tho left bank
of tho Tugela.
"Tho actual position held was per
fectly tenable, but did not lend Itself
to an advance as the southern slopes
were so steep that Warren could not
get an effective artillery position and
water supplies were a dlfllculty.
"On January 23d I assented to his
attacking Splon Kop, a largo hill, In
deed, a mountain, which was evidently
tho key to tho position, but was far
moro accessible from tho north than
from the south. On the night of Janu
ary 23d ho attacked Splon Kop, but
found It very difficult to hold, as Its
perimeter was too largo and water,
which ho had been led to believe In this
extraordinary dry season, was found
"Tho crests were held all that day
against severe attneks and a heavy
shell fire. Our men fought with great
gallantry. I would especially mention
tho conduct of tho Second Cameron
Indians and tho Third King's Rifles,
who supported tho nttack on tho moun
tain from tho steepest side, and, in
each case, fought their way to tho top,
and tho Second Luncashlro Fusiliers
nnd Second Middlesex, who magnifi
cently maintained the best traditions
of tho British throughout tho trying
day of January 24th, and Tbornycroft's
Mounted Infantry, who fought through
tho any equally well alongside of them.
"General Woodgatc, who was In com
mand at tho summit, having been
wounded, tho officer who succeeded him
decided on the night of January 24th to
abandon tho position nnd did so be
foro dnwn, January 2Dth.
"I reached Warren's camp at 5 a. ra.
on January 25th and decided that a
second attack on Splon Kop was use
less nnd tho enemy's right was too
strong to allow me to force It.
"Accordingly I decided to withdraw
tho force to tho south of tho Tugela.
At G n. m. wo commenced withdrawing
tho train, nnd by 8 n. m., Jnnuary 27th
(Saturday,) Warren's forco was con
centrated south of tho Tugela without
tho loss of n man or a pound of stores.
"Tho fact that tho forces should
withdraw from nctual touch In somo
cases the lines wcro less than a thou
sand yards apart with tho enemy In
tho manner It did, is, I think sufficient
ovldence of the morale of tho troops
and that wo wcro permitted to with
draw our cumbrous ox and mulo trans
ports ncross tho river, clghty-flvo yards
broad, with 20-foot banks and a very
swift current, unmolested is. I think
proof that tho enemy has been tnught
to respect our soldiers' fighting
