REPORT OF WAILUKU WORK
Wiilluku. Maul, 1-Vli 12. The black
plague lmR nt Inst reached Knliulul
nml the cuinmunlty Id fully nwnro of
the sciioiisncss of the situation. Last
Saturday morning, n Clilnnmau who
hail como fiom Knliulul tho previous
evening and slept over night nt n
frlen.. s house In Wnlliiku near the
railroad depot, was driven to Dr. Ar-
iiiltage by John do llcgo. Then was
Dr. Armltage's suspicion verified that
tho plague Is heie.
The doctor notified Sheriff llaldwiu
of .110 case and In a short wlillo tho
whole of Wnlliiku town and Its suburbs
Walknmt, Walclico and Wnlhce wero
declared In quarantine. Knliulul at
tho same time was declared an Infect
ed port and n strict quarantine was put
over the place.
The long building of Chinese stores
adjoining tho Custom House was soon
Biirrounded by guards put there by tho
sheriff. Hut many of the wary Japs
and Chinese of the place had already
skipped to all parts of Maul. Soon
after tho deaths of tho four mysterious
rases last week leported by tho doc
tors as "pernicious malarial favor,"
some of the Chinese mid Japanese be
came suspicious of the, situation and
several hundred of them had already
deserted Kahuliil. some going up Pala,
Maknwao, Kula, some In Wnlliiku,
NviiIIiImII, Walknpu and Wnlhce, and
some have even gone over to Lnhnlnn.
They knew what was coming.
Owing to the entire lack of instru
ments up here there is not even a
microscope of sufllcicnt size to care
fully examine specimens from tho In
fected paits Drs. Armltago nml Wed
dlck were loth to go ahead on the phy
sical nppeainnres and dcelare the rases
to be plngue.
As long ago as Sunday. Fob. 1, when
the first suspicious case occuned in
Wnlliiku, Dr. Armltago reported It to
tho sheriff ns a suspicious oho. nut
the sheriff did not doom himself, ns
chief of tho Hoard of Health on Mnul,
Justified In declining quarantine right
away ror fear of causing nn unneceS'

Maui, If It happened to turn out that the
case was not plague, liven after the
case of Sam Yeng, Chlnnman, and tho
Japanese woman nml her child who all
died in dirty hovels In Knliulul on the
i th Inst., tho sheriff did not feel Just!
fled In declaring quarantine, although
the circumstances leading to these last
deaths were even more suspicious than
the first. Last Friday, when tho
wealthy Chinaman. Ah Ming, died nt
Knliulul, a well developed bubo was
noticed on the loft leg of the deceased,
but the fact that Ah Ming hail been
sick for three months was enough to
suppress the fear of tho community.
However, Dr. Weddlck, the govern
ment physician, rut off n poitlou of
o bubo nml sent it to Honolulu with
tho result nlrendy known.
The fact that many of the Chinese
nml Japs left Kahuliil before tho dec

was utilized as a pest house in chnrgo
of Mr. Green ns nurse. The Chliin
mnii died at 11 o'clock Saturday night,
with most painful agonies us icporteil
by Mr. Green, who was the only one
who saw tho victim pass away.
Tho long building In Knliulul will
bo burned at 11 o'clock this morning by
oruer of the lloaid of Health. W. T.
Kobliibon, deputy assessor of Wnlliiku
estimates the Inhabitants in this build
ing to bo nearly 2,000. From the slzo
of the bu. .IngH no one would suppose
that 500 people could be quartered
comfortnbly there. Jas. I.. Coke, who
has been visiting the building In tho
capacity of Inspector, declines tho place
to lie In a most unsanitary condition.
There nrc no less than C00 small rooms
In this long building, tho plnco being
