Let us tell you something about Elec

have nttlced that your bill for electric
lighting has varied pcculbrly from month

words about your meter and you think
that the Light Compmy Is cheating you.
The Company Is not cheating you YOU

consumes nearly twice as much current
as when It Is first used. If when your

Tho Chronicle of Santa Paula, Ven
tura county, Callforna, says: "It is
rumored that tho Oxnnrds have been
making estimates as to the cost of
constructing a ship canal from the
ocean to their factory. They expect
to ship crudo sugar from Hawaii to be
refined here, nnd they have no wharf
nearer thnn Hucncme. It is claimed
that Oxnnrd Is a little below sea level,
and by removing tho sand dunes near
tho water's edge, nnd digging a ennai,
that It would easily fill from tho ocean.
Tho distance Is only two and one-half
to three miles, and tho expense of con
structing a canal would not bo great."

BUYING DANISH ISLANDS
New York, Feb. 7. A Washington

statement that views with l'cfcrcnco

between tho United Stntcs and Den

By the acquisition of these Islands
nnd tho possession of Porto Rico nnd
the Hnwatlan Islands, the United
States will practically control tho ap
proaches of the proposed Nicaragua
'ihero Is nuthmlty fur tho statement
that Secretary liny, beforo agreeing to
the prol8lon prohlbting tho establish-
incut of fortifications at tho terminal
of tho canal, carefully considered tho
possessions uf tho United Stntcs in
tho Immediate vicinity and that In Ini
tiating negotiations with Ecuador for
Chatham island nnd with Denmark for
tho Danish West Indies, ho was actuat
ed by n dcslro to sccuro sites for na
val stations which would effectively
control tho approaches to tho canal.
With tho Islands now held nnd those
being negotiated for, Administration
officials are satisfied that no dllllculty
will exist ns to tho United States com
manding nnd protecting tho canal.
The authorities aro very loath to dis
cuss tho matter nnd, whllo lefuslng to
admit that negotiations were In prog
ress with Denmark, It was stated that
the Minister nt Quito was conferring
with Ecuador's representatives rclntlvo
to tho acquisition of tho Island of Chat
ham or the right to establish a coal
ing station thereon.
No doubt Is cxpiessed that tho Unit
ed Stntcs will bo nhlo to secure tho con
sent of both Denmark nnd Ecuador lo
tho acquisition of tho Islands It si'cks,
hut it Is understood that this Govern
ment is not hurrying tho negotiations.
